“Peace, quiet and superb wine make this the ideal getaway location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2009

I've been living in and travelling round Poland for 15 years and have not found weekend retreat that even comes close to this place. The food is superb, everything tastes better than it does in the city (maybe that's because of the air), and the wine is even better. If you want to be active, you can mess about in a boat on the ultra clean lake, play tennis, ride a bike or go swimming. A better choice is to just kick back in the garden, admire the vinyard and try a few new wines from all round the world. But make sure there's space in your car for the crate of wine you'll want to buy, the only way you'll leave without one is if you leave with two (or more). John and Ania are excellent hosts who make you feel as if you are staying at a friend's country house. It's certainly one of my three favourite places in Poland.

“A great retreat for business or pleasure - wonderful food”

We have visited John and Anna at Kania lodge many times. The lodge is above a beautiful clean lake and very quiet but Gdansk is only a 40 minute drive away. The wonderful food is based on recipes that the hosts have picked up on their travels all over the world but the produce is local. John loves his wine (he has a separate wine business) and there is always a great selection. We have also done a couple of company retreats there. The lodge can handle up to about 20 people. The atmosphere is very homely and friendly.
Rooms are simple but comfortable and very spacious. Some have wood-burning stoves and all have great views.
Great for walks, cycling, swimming...if you dare (the lake can be cold until high summer). There are two eighteen hole golf courses within 45-60 minutes drive and a nine hole course even closer.
Would recommend visiting at any time of the year. The area is beautiful when the snow lies thick, even though you are more limited in choices of activities...reading and drinking wine is always one of the best!)

“Wonderful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2008

Kania Lodge was a surprising little gem.....your host is a charming and interesting Kiwi who married a Polish woman many years ago. The food is excellent and uses fresh local produce combined with an international flair, the selection of wines is mind boggling and served by the host who is very helpful in recommending them, and the place itself is set in beautiful countryside overlooking a lake. They helped arrange a reliable and reasonable pick up and drop off at Gdansk airport as well. Really is a lovely place and I can't wait to return.

“Loved the warm and hospitable atmosphere and great food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2007

Kania Lodge is approx. 40 km west of Gdansk near the town of Kartuzy. The owners are from New Zealand and Poland and the lodge is inspired by the southern hemisphere and particularly New Zealand. We found it to be a friendly, warm and comfortable place to stay and enjoy nature and great food and wine. Actually the food we had here was almost the best we ever had in Poland! There is no menu - but a 3-course set dinner and lunch is served everyday at reasonable price. They accomodate the menu to suit kids as well. The owner runs a wine company and we had excellent wine, that we could also order or bring home. We have small children and it was nice that we could use the kitchen to warm milk etc. and there was a skipping rope, some outdoor toys and a small playground - though mainly for older children. The Lodge have their own sheep that we would watch with the children. There is a garden, tennis court and a vineyard. It was too cold to go on the lake, but in summer the lake must be a great place to spend time.

We walked in the area. Roads are bumpy and not suitable for prams/strollers - so bring a child carrier instead. Lots of farm animals to see for the kids. Good area for bicycling. We visited GDansk and the Kascuby area and the upside down house. The Upside Down House is a project created by a Polish businessman and philanthropist named Daniel Czapiewski, and is located in Poland in the tiny village of Szymbark. The park where the house is also have the longest plank of wood in the world, playgrounds, small restaurants etc. It was quite fun to see.

We had a really enjoyable stay!
