Stromstad was a little reminiscent of the Truman Show, all very neat and perfect – and that’s no bad thing. I imagine a stay at either of the two major hotels in Stromstad is going to be a bit ‘hit and miss’ as the experience will be largely determined by if and what sort of convention is in town. Both appear to be seriously targeting that market.
The Spa is the better hotel but is significantly out of town and if there is a conference there is really little other place to escape to. We stayed at the Laholmen and enjoyed being a short walk to the town. The rooms were perfectly adequate, had a nice balcony with table and chairs, and the breakfast was significant, fresh and varied. Views from balcony, dining room and terrace are all beautiful from the hotel.
We had good meals everywhere – you’ll know by now how expensive everything is in Sweden – but should call out the Kontorset – really enjoyable and a good buzz. And the meal at the Rokeriet which was part our conference was truly wonderful (but try and get someone else to pay). You can enjoy smoked fish while actually watching them do the smoking. No need to ask if the fish is fresh here!
If you arrive by bus/train (and your bag has wheels) you can just drag them the short walk around the harbour to the hotel from the terminus. For the spa take a taxi.
