“What a beautiful part of England”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

We absolutely loved our stay at the River Cottage. Gilly and John are fabulous hosts and the property is devine. We loved feeding the trout in the stream that runs past the property and enjoyed the walks around the area. Who would think that on a 7 week European holiday we would be staying with a mad Kiwi on the morning of the World Cup Rugby final. Everything about our stay here was fantastic. The breakfast is amazing, even when the footy is on! and the conversation very enjoyable. Our room was perfect. Thanks gilly & John for a fabulous time. Jim & Julie from Oz

River Cottage is simply delightful; the rooms are well appointed, attention to detail spot on. Jilly and John are splendid hosts; the breakfasts are fantastic, with freshly made bread and homemade conserves.

“Just Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

This was my third time at River Cottage and it was as good as ever. Gilly and John are great hosts and happy to share all the local knowledge of what to do and where to go. Breakfast was the best I've had especailly the black pudding! I can't say I found the A6 to be an issue, the room was lovely and quiet at night. We will be back again.

“Lovely B&B with great hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

We stayed for two nights. Met with a lovely welcome, with lots of information about local pubs and walks etc. Room was very nice, as was the en-suite, both clean and nicely decorated (my wife loved the wallpaper!). As with the previous review, I was a little concerned with potential road noise, but it wasn't an issue. Breakfast was delicious, perhaps one of the best I have had, served by the every friendly Gilly and John.

The location is perfect, there are a few walks right from the house (we took the circular route to Monsal Head) and a couple of pubs in the village. We ate at the Bulls Head both nights, food was good for pub food. We did try to get a table at the (I think) White Hart Inn, which is a short drive away, but on a Thurs night they didn't have any tables! So I suggest a reservation - it looked very nice and was highly recommended by our hosts.

The only slight negative for me personally was the length of the bed. I am fairly tall, and the bed had an 'end' to it, which meant I couldn't sleep stretched out, so not a great sleep.

Overall we loved the place and if we return to the area (maybe with our bikes next time, to ride the Monsal trail) we will certainly trying to stay here.

“Don't look any further!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

WOW ! Stay here if your looking for privacy but with that little extra - in the way of fantastic hosts - who give a warm welcome & a sincere interest in their guests & good conversation if wanted. Our room was lovely with a super spacious shower room. All extremely clean, with beautiful quality curtains & bedding. As i say - when staying away from home I would like the same quality or better, and this was certainly so.
We managed to sit next to the river each day on return from our walks in the garden with a nice glass of wine ( which we brought with us - can put it in the fridge till needed ), feeding the Trout & a couple of ducks. So relaxing!
Then there's the breakfast - all freshly cooked to order. Delicious. Lovely freshly sliced fruit and the homemade bread & jams / marmalade just made our stay more special.
We booked in advance at the Ashford Arms in the village for one evening meal which was really nice & also lovely that we were able to walk there & back. You will find a torch in the bedroom for on the way home as River Cottage is just on the edge of the village away from other houses. The 2nd evening we booked in at The White Lion at Great Longstone about 2 mile drive away. Yet again a wonderful meal, really well presented.
Thankyou John & Gilly.
