“What potential!”

Great location in Nidderdale but arrived at 'reception' which involves knocking on a kitchen door and the smell reminded one of school dinners. Shown to room by lady who we did not see again and room was in annexe which was small and sparsely furnished with tiny TV in corner. We had asked to bring our dogs and it may be that this room is the only 'dog friendly' room but it was far removed from the rooms illustrated in the website. Entered the bar for dinner through a very cluttered drawing room which did not seem to attract any visitors during our stay. The food in the bar was very good but like the rest of the decor it looked like it needed a makeover. Breakfast is offered at nine which seems a little late. The cooked selection was delicious and served by the friendly staff who could not be faulted for their enthusiasm.
I suspect that this hotel has a loyal following for the food and service but it is unlikely to attract a new and more discerning group of visitors without moving into the 21st century with regards to decor.

“Just a few things need tweeking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

A bit underwhelmed at the reception or lack of it, hanging about in a passageway waiting for someone to come out of the kitchen. Not the best of starts. Room only average for a high class establishment. Food and service faultless and comfort of the beds was exquisite. The lounge is a bit tired and uninviting. Could do with a fire in there and should be a place where guests could come and read in the daytime. Could do with a refurbishment generally.

“Great rooms, great food”

A pretty stone built place with beautiful outdoor areas and gardens: lovely to sit and have a drink on a summer day. Smart comfortable room with excellent en suite bathroom and a quality mattress. Service was faultless and the food of a high standard. Best thing we ate was a king scallop[p starter in the shell with emmental cheese. Starters 7 to 9 pounds, mains about 18. decent selection of wines around the £20 mark. We had a great weekend there and will definitely return. Unreservedly recommended.

“Good food, but not perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2010

On the whole enjoyed our trip. Great dinner in the restaurant, not as good in the bar. We were in room 3 above the bar so could hear the door constantly closing which was annoying. The food is served only from 7pm which means everyone piles into the bar at the same time, rushing to get their orders in. Not sure why these hours operate as people arriving at 7 or slightly later have a long wait. Some fellow diners had a poor experience as a result, and thye got a wrong order, so it's a bit hit and miss. Also breakfast at 9-9:30 is a bit late, and also seems to put pressure on the kitchens again with everyone ordering at once. That said the service and food we got were excellent, and though not great value for money, would consider returning.
