“It's all in the details”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

It's all in the details: there's nothing wrong with the hotel, but there are plenty of little details that could be improved, and that make it drop to the middle of the rank. Details like the hair-drier not working, the wireless internet that, while commendably free, works once out of three times. Also, the hotel overlooks a road; if you have a room near it, it will be noisier than I would like a hotel outside of the city to be. I may very well end up coming back, but I was not enthusiastic...

“Great place for visiting Castelli Romani”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2010

We stayed a couple of nights at this hotel while visiting Castelli Romani. It is a perfect point for excursions to the charming hills, lakes and villages in the area. You will need a car and a GPS to be able to get around without getting lost. A small car is recommended if you drive to and park in one of the hill villages...

The hotel was clean and quiet with friendly and helpful staff. August is obviously their low season so there were only a few guests. Rates were very reasonable.

On the last night we decided to eat in the Hotel restaurant. We sat outside on the terrace, which is nothing special. However, the food was just fantastic. One of the best meals of this trip at a very reasonable rate. Do NOT skip the desserts; they are out of this world!

“Comfortable and elegant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

Hotel Villa Vecchia was a well kept secret for us - and probably for most other Tripadvisor users - until we by chance noticed the signpost outside Frascati in our search for accommodation. For unknown reasons this hotel does not occur under Frascati hotels, in spite of a central location 1 km outside the town. Instead it is registered under Rome hotels, leading to an undeserved low and anonymous Tripadvisor ranking.

The hotel was a very positive experience. A four star conference hotel open for tourists with fair rates during summer months when business is off season. A stylish and elegant old villa with aristocratic touch and atmosphere. We got a well equipped triple room with skylight window (therefore no view), large and clean with modern bathroom. Strange that only pay TV was offered (SKY). Unfortunately there are no balconies at the hotel but views from the roof terraces are stunning in all directions.

Front desk staff friendly, efficient and informative. Breakfast is served in the adjacent cellar restaurant with nice outdoor facilities. Large selection and OK quality but service staff seemed unengaged. In the garden a small, well functioning pool. The hotel leaflet describes the garden as a "park" which is slightly overstated. Check out of room by 10 am, if later will cost ½ room rate. A pity that late check-out is not allowed without extras.

The hotel is a good basis for exploring Frascati and the attractive Castelli Romani area. There is a local pizzeria with good value pizzas 2 km towards Monteporzio Catone, left side of road. Also check out this fascinating little village on top of the hill by night time when the outdoor bars in the central piazza wake up! Also the town of Frascati has a magic spirit, especially during evenings when Rome lights up the northern horizon.

“NOT as advertised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2010

Standard room smelled musty and looked out over the front parking area so we upgraded to a "deluxe" room which smelled just as bad. In addition the deluxe room was facing onto the road so we had to choose between odor (windows closed) and traffic noise (windows open). You can also listen to bad music from the wedding being held outside.

The hotel claims it is a family location but they do a lot of "function" business so when you take your kids to the restaurant be prepared to encounter drunken business groups carrying on loudly, even if they are in another part of the restaurant.

At breakfast the eggs and bacon were ice cold. I've never seen eggs and bacon at breakfast elsewhere in Italy, so maybe this how they eat the stuff, but I doubt it.

They have a traffic gate between the parking lot and the check-in parking area and I had to get out of the car and walk into the hotel to request they raise the gate both entering and leaving.

Maybe it was too early in the season, but the grounds look nothing like the gorgeous photos on the web site.

Frascati is a nice town. I'd go there again but stay somewhere else.

“Inconvenient place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

This hotel is about 20-30 km from Rome and about 3 km from downtown Frascati. Going to town needs a long walk or a shuttle van provided by the hotel. However, the shuttle runs every hour and has only 8 seats. During my stay, there was a conference with over 100 people attending. The hotel did not care to increase the shuttle service in spite of a very high demand. Very disappointed!!!!!
Also, the room door is not completely locked. You can kick the door and it will open up for you. The key card is a bit of a joke. Remember to put your valuable things within the safe (at least the hotel provides the safe in house), or you might loose your stuff.
If you want to see Rome, this is very inconvenient place to stay.
