We arrived in Avignon on the direct line Eurostar summer service train. It was so quick and easy. A really good way to travel down to the south of France. I’d highly recommend it.
We had to queue at Avignon station at the Avis car hire desk for about an hour, but it's a good job we had pre ordered our car, because the man in front of us hadn't and they didn't have any spare cars for him. We managed to find our accommodation fairly easily in about 40 minutes, following the road signs which are pretty good actually.
Our accommodation was a self catering apartment at Provence Country Club, just to the east of Avignon, yet right in the country, next to a lovely town called Isle sur la Sorgue, and a national park. I managed to book the apartment last minute so wasn't sure what to expect because the booking was just for me and my husband, but it was billed as being for 6. I wasn’t disappointed. It was a lovely kitchen/diner with 2 separate bedrooms, very clean and with plenty of equipment to make your stay enjoyable. Not sure if 6 could have comfortably inhabited it, but it had a nice balcony and lovely views.
The resort itself was well run, clean, friendly, English speaking, with a swimming pool (which was too cold!), tennis courts, golf driving range and golf course. Neither of us can play golf but we managed to hire a club for about 2 euros, and you can get about 35 balls for 2 euros to have a go on the driving range. I believe lessons are available. To keep costs down we didn’t eat out that much but did have a good meal in Isle sur la sorgue and in the club house in the resort. My husband is a vegetarian and the chef was happy to put something together especially for him when there was nothing he could eat from the menu. I had a fantastic steak (well done of course!) and with views over the golf course and of the setting sun over the mountains it’s a pretty wonderful setting.
We may even go back there because it was such a good base from which to explore the many interesting places around it.
Overall, it was a lovely, quiet and relaxing break and the weather was great. A highly recommended destination.
