“Almost paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We stayed in a studio unit with an amazing view from the balcony. Since it was late when we checked it, it was nearly sunset. The palm trees silhouetted against the backdrop of an evening sky and beach were just amazing. It really felt like staying in paradise. Our room was very clean, with all new furniture. The kitchenette was wonderful! We brought some food items with us and kept in the small fridge, for breakfast, the next day. The bathroom is spacious! We ate a lovely breakfast on our balcony, and enjoyed the island vista. For about $4 a person, you can take a very short drive, to the "state park" next door. They have public restrooms, public beach, campgrounds and primitive rental condos. There were food vendors like pizza, ice cream, etc, parked close to the beach. The waters were beautiful and calm. They have playgrounds for kids and picnic tables. The hotel doesn't have its own beach, just the pool (which we didn't use). Since we only stayed one night, I don't know if there is more to do in the neighborhood. We drove to Ponce the next day, to tour the art museum. Definitely give it a visit, if you are in the South of PR! We'd stay here again. *Note, if driving, be prepared for their odd parking arrangements. They park your car two to three deep, in one spot. You have to leave your keys with the front desk. So, when you are ready to leave, be prepared to wait a while, so they can move the other cars. ;-) My only complaint is that the restaurant closed at 8pm and we had no other options for food, on the property, except the vending machines. Otherwise, a great value and beautiful location!

Room Tip: Room 203 was great! Full view of the park/beach, next door.

“Not good, not bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Not good, not bad. Excellent location, but not a very good cleanliness and, also, not a good cost-benefit ratio. I would give a grade of 6/10.

“Not Paradise but darn good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

My wife and I spent 7 nights in a 2-bedroom suite that had a large living room with kitchenette and two bathrooms. We looked west onto the beach and setting sun with a comfortable and quite large balcony. Early evening on the balcony with rum drinks was a perfect way to begin night activities. This was amazing for $110 per night.

No place is perfect, and many guests did not have accommodations nearly as nice as ours.

Among the hotel's other imperfections were the fact that wireless is only available in the 2nd- and 3rd-floor lobbies. Why wireless is not available in each suite defies logic. I need to use the internet daily and often, and going to the sometimes crowded and noisy breezeway lobby on the 3rd floor was far from ideal. In fact, it could be irritating at times.

Other irritants included a poorly stocked kitchen, so far as cooking implements and eating utensils are concerned (We prefer to cook our breakfasts.) and the interminable wait for warm water in the shower.

These annoyances aside, the charm of the town, which truly deserves to be called "funky-nice," the near-by nature reserves, the excellence of the food in town, the friendliness and hospitality of the English-speaking staff at the hotel, and the scrupulous cleaning that daily took place throughout the hotel (save for one day--a Tuesday--when our room was not cleaned or the beds made), combined to make this a real find. We highly recommend it.

Now fix the wireless and kitchen issues!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view on the 3rd floor or higher.

“Boqueron Beach Resort, Very Good except for mattresses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Let me start off by saying our one night stay at the Boqueron Beach Resort was free. I used Delta Sky miles for the stay and had wanted to see the southern part of the island, heard the beaches were nice, and that was the reason for our stay here. For being free, I am not going to complain, it served its purpose for us.

The hotel is very nice, well kept, grounds are secure (gated entrance). Pool area is nice (we did not use pool), etc. Lobby was nice. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was nice as well. Had a fridge and a sink. Nice Balcony.

We got a room that had two double beds. THe mattresses on the beds were very soft, and caved in the middle. Not very good sleeping mattresses, for me at least. My wife and I by the middle of the night were in separate beds, due to the poor mattresses. Other than this one issue, the room was fine.

Check In was at 4, an hour later than most hotels, and check out was at 11, an hour earlier. Any additional hour is $35. This was annoying, but the room was free, so I cannot complain.

You get a special key to get to the beach and town. If you lose it, it is $100. Not a big deal just be aware of potential hidden costs. You need to sign out beach towels and return them by a certain time each day otherwise there is a charge. There is also no place to just get a cup of coffee during the day unless you go to the restaurant, if it is open at that time. My wife is a tea drinker, no tea on premises. We did not eat at hotel restaurant, it has set hours for Breakfast, lunch and dinner, and we prefer to find local spots in town. We found one, that was quite good, separate write up. La Marea

“A hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

Aquarius Vacation Club was a delight. My 4 friends and I were celebrating 2 milestone birthdays and we could not have chosen a better place. The staff was friendly, helpful and informative. Our suite had both a view of the beach and the forest. From our spacious balcony, we were able to see the sunset and the many birds in the trees. The hotel had a restaurant and bar that served breakfast, lunch and dinner and that was close to the pool.
The beach was lovely and never crowded. We were walking distance from the fishing town of Boqueron where you could go kayaking, eat in restaurants and stands with excellent seafood and local dishes, and shop in touristy shops.
We especially enjoyed the stands with inexpensive clams and oysters, and the ones that sold empanadas filled with fresh fish.
Additionally, we were a short driving distance from other spectacular beaches (like Playa La Sucia), the lighthouse, the touristy town of Paguera (where you can swim with the luminescent creatures at night) and Ponce (where you can visit a world renowned museum).
The only temporary downside was that you could not access the beach directly from the hotel because they were renovating a pedestrian bridge.
