I stayed one night here here while doing the Mae Hong Son Loop bike trip in January 2012. I liked the feel of the place, set right next to the river with very nice views to the mountains. My room was very comfortable and quite stylish, with superb teak floors and nice furniture. My room was on the ground floor, this meant that my balcony was kind of shared with the restuarant balcony and not very private, it was not a problem on the night that I was there, but I suggest that a room on the higher floors would be more private and quiet. Breakfast (included) was very good and the service was excellent, very friendly and nice people. There were a few very laid back bar/restaurants on the river close by.

Stayed for one night on the drive to MHS. Warm welcome from the receptionist and happy to show me the available rooms before I checked in. Convenient parking opposite. Very nice teak building on 3 floors, most rooms with balconies and decks overlooking the Yuam river and off to the Burmese border and are a good size. Nice bathrooms, hot water good and nicely decorated. There is wifi in the hotel and it just about made it to the 3rd floor room where I was. Breakfast was good also served on the deck by the river.
The location is convenient and close to some good restaurants, turn right out of the hotel and "Coriander in Redwood" is very good, turn left and you have "Northwest GH" which does nice food and if you keep going there are several other nice riverside places, you won't starve in this town. A couple of lovely Burmese style wats are close by plus a little street of laundry places. The markets are a little further away maybe 10-15min walk. I love this little town and hope to get back soon and I'll stay at the Riverhouse hotel again if they have a room, it ain't the Ritz, but it's cute, comfortable with friendly staff and a decent price.

We came the 2nd time in 2 years and it was the same lovely little hotel, we came with a party of 6 and had 2 rooms in here and absolutely satisfied, the other couple stayed at the Riverhouse resort and paid 3,5x more and absolutely disappointed, so next time everybody will stay in this lovely teakwood guesthouse. The a la carte diner at the wooden river terrace was lovely and the service very friendly.

Unfortunately, the few major advantages of this place (nice wooden house, great location by the river and friendly staff) don't make up for some major problems:

- Towels and sheets in the room were plain dirty. I do believe (or at least hope) that they had been washed, but still - they were all full of stains (think black spots all over the towel).

- The room floor was full of dust - it has been a while since it was properly cleaned

- Maintenance of the hotel was really bad - squeaking doors, stuck windows, broken electricity outlets etc.

- the room was not mosquito-proof

It looks like the hotel tries to live off their past glory (aka Lonely Planet's best pick in town) - I would definitely try other alternatives (Northwest across the street looks great!) before choosing this hotel.
