I had known of the castle from early childhood and had asked my father often, if we could visit when I was a young child seeing it across the meadows as we passed. His answer was, it was someone's home and not possible to just call in. Therefore when it became a hotel in the 90s it was on my list to visit. My wife was in the later stages of a brain tumour in November 2011 and so less than 2 weeks before she died we had our stay there. The welcome we received and attention we were given was faultless. I had to delay the booking by one day because of my wife's failing health but that was understood and our room was changed to facilitate her wheelchair. Philip greeted us and after putting our things in our room, parked the car and made sure all was well. Unfortunately we were unable to use the restaurant, it being upstairs, but our breakfasts were set on a table just for the two of us in a drawing room. My wife and I were wholly relaxed and were cared for perfectly. Philip had the uncanny knack of knowing just when the log fire needed rekindling and our glasses needed refreshing. Our room fulfilled all those desires a princess has for her stay in a castle, the bed, the drapes, the atmosphere. I cannot thank the staff enough for their attention and will have memories of a perfect stay which will last for ever. If you need to switch off, be away behind thick walls without mobile communication or wifi, then Amberley Castle is the perfect place for you. If you require to eat away from the castle our recommendation would be "The Squire and Horse" at the foot of Bury hill, it's worth a visit for lunch or dinner, but book early! Enjoy and never regret.
