“A very relaxing break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

This break was booked as a Christmas present for me from my wife, and as it turned out it could not have come at a better time - the end of a months work without a day off, so I was ready to enjoy a couple of days doing nothing.
On arrival we were efficiently checked in without problem and directed to our suite.
My wife had booked a junior suite (room 71) which was defiantly worth paying the extra for, being able to put our bags in the upstairs gallery bedroom then relax with our complimentary bubbly while watching Sunday afternoon football on sky sports got it off to a good start.
The bathrobes and slippers in the suite are a vital addition, meaning that after a bath or shower you can relax for a while without having to sit round in a towel or immediately get dressed.
The rooms and bathroom were both perfectly clean and well decorated with everything in perfect working order (a rarity in most hotels) and the bed was gigantic, a monster that allowed me to have the best couple of nights sleep I have had in a long time (in part due to not having my three year old daughter wake me at six a.m.) the pillows were also excellent to the point that I even looked at the label to see what brand they were, although I had forgotten this by the time we got home.
We ate in the restaurant both nights, choosing to have a drink in the bar first while we browsed the menus. The food in the restaurant was good and very well presented, on the Sunday night neither myself or my wife had room for a dessert (possibly because the food was so rich).
The bread on the table is a nice touch as is the offer of more once it is eaten, the amuse bouch we were given on the Monday evening was excellent, a salmon and dill terrine which was amazingly flavoursome.
Breakfast is excellent with the usual continental/buffet to start then a vast choice of cooked items , both mornings we opted for the full English which was as good as any I have ever eaten, very nice thick smoked bacon and quality tasting sausage.
On the Monday we spent the day in the spa, an impressive facility which seems almost as big as the hotel itself. If you have access to the hotel fitness club as part of your room deal then virtually all of the spa facilities are available to you at no extra cost. The infra red sauna was a particular favourite of ours and the day seemed to pass very quickly.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpfully (even the chambermaids) with only a couple of things being forgotten in the restaurant the only critisism, such minor things are to be expected occasionally though.
I had a slight problem with a charge on my account which I took up with the hotel on my return to avoid spoiling the atmosphere while there, and to their credit they have been fantastic about it, escalating it to the owner who dealt with me directly and to my complete satisfaction, thank you.

All in all we had a fantastic relaxing time there and I hope to return, I would rate this hotel at 90% plus, thank you to all the staff for looking after us, the owner for sorting out my problem and my wife for booking it.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a suite - its worth the extra.

Thank you for submitting a review and also for giving us the opportunity to deal with your very fair comments regarding the charge for an upgrade to the spa facilities before doing so. As I have said in the past guests know more about our service than we do and we are genuinely grateful for feedback, particularly when we get it wrong and our guests pay us the compliment of putting things right understanding that the measure of a good company is not that things never go wrong but how they respond if they do. We were really pleased to read that there were so many aspects of your stay that delighted you hope that we will see you again should you ever be back in the Midlands.

“Wedding Reception at Fairlawns”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

After visiting Fairlawns earlier in 2011 we decided this was the right location for us to hold our evening wedding reception.

We spent 2011 planning and preparing for our wedding and this meant a lot of contact with the events office at Fairlawns. Joanne has been fantastic throughout our planning, a real pleasure to deal with and always very prompt and efficient. So we knew we were in good hands for our wedding.

The day came and it was fantastic!

A number of our guest stayed at Fairlawns and made good use of their lovely spa facilities, I had a number of relaxing treatments and my therapist Laura was really good and made the experience very relaxing for me

Our evening then was upon us and Chris and his team looked after us for the evening. They were fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble, staff were really efficient, polite and friendly. I can honestly say I've never been to any other hotel where the staff are as good as Fairlawns.

We had a hot buffet for the food.....delicious! our wedding guest are still commenting on the food 2 weeks after the event!

And we used the Fairlawns DJ who was great, kept people dancing and the music was well thought out.

All in all we are SO pleased we chose Fairlawns for our special evening, the team there certainly didn't disapoint, we came away very contented...and looking forward to our next visit.

Well one Fairlawns!

“Highlight was the food!”

My two sisters, mum and mother in law stayed here for one night at the end of January. We booked the premium rooms which had a nice decor, very comfy beds and sitting area. We had rooms 38, 39 and 40. I did think that our bathroom could have been a little cleaner as there was mildew around the shower.
When we checked in we noticed two out of the 3 rooms were missing dressing gowns and slippers, this was quickly rectified once we mentioned this to reception, but not really what I would have expected.
The staff in the bar and restaurant were particurlarly friendly, striking up conversations and giving a truly excellent service during our whole stay.
We had evening meal included in our package. We were allotted a time, 8.30pm which was fine for us but others may prefer to have the option of when they eat. That said the restaurant was extremelly busy ( it was sat night). The package included 3 courses and the food was truly 1st class. I was very impressed with the goats cheese starter, and sebass main. The staff remained prefessional and attentive throughout the meal.
Im my opinion it was the food that made our break so enjoyable, we did not use the spa facilities but I would like to return to do this in the future.

We were delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay but disappointed that there were lapses in our attention to detail regarding various housekeeping issues. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to put those matters right at the time and for your comments which will assist us in ensuring we do not let future guests down in the same way. The restaurant and kitchen teams are thrilled to have read your very encouraging comments regarding the food and the service and join me in thanking you for sharing those with others. It would be lovely were you to be able to revisit to use the Health Club and Spa so if there is an opportunity then please email me to let me know that you are coming and we'll arrange something special.

“Amazing experience!”

My husband and I stayed here for our first wedsing anniversary with their romantic package for three nights and we can safely say that was the best hotel experience we have had! The staff knew us by name by the first morning and even though the hotel seemed full we still felt as if we were the only guests which was lovely. Really appreciate that they also took the trouble to find us some non alcoholic wine for our anniversary as we are tee total but still wanted to have something other that orange juice to celebrate. Food and service in the restaurant was also amazing and this is coming from myself as someone who has worked in a two rosette restaurant and my husband is a chef from kings college Cambridge! Although not great for being able to get into the city centre it was still perfect for where we wanted to go. We would definitely recommend this hotel for a romantic break. Well done Fairlawns! Hope to come back soon!

“Wonderful Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed here for the weekend as it was nearby family - I travelled up for my 'special' birthday and so wanted somewhere special to stay. It certainly lives up to it's reviews - a gem of a hotel, wonderfully run. The staff were outstanding, always smiling and friendly and so professional. We stayed in a Family Room, which consisted of a living room, with large brown leather sofa and chairs, tv and desk, with bunk beds off, then it was a step up to our bedroom (another tv) with en-suite. To my personal taste, I found the decor quite masculine - all dark brown and leather, but I suppose this is standard hotel decor. Everything was spotlessly clean and of good quality. They do offer room service, though not cooked breakfast in the room, though it is worth venturing down for as is was marvellous, a great selection of cereals, fruits, etc. then the Full English, though it was not large, with just one rasher of bacon and one small sausage. The tables are beautifully laid out though. Unfortunately we did not get a good nights sleep though.... this is a wedding venue and there was music until midnight, though not too loud. Unluckily our room was near the stairwell and we were kept awake by people returning to their rooms until about 2am. Then at 5am we were awoken by staff banging about, as our room we guessed was near the staff rooms by the look of the windows. We did not try the Spa facilities, as we travelled as a family and children under 16 are not allowed to use the facilites. I did ask if we could opt out of using the spa - to save a bit of money - but was told this option is available for double rooms but not family rooms, which I thought was a bit odd. All in all, a good stay, which we might have enjoyed more if our room had been differently located, but that is just the luck of the draw.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the function rooms and the stairwell.

Thank you for your very detailed review. Given the fact you had a disturbed nights sleep (really sorry) you have been really quite generous and we are grateful to you for highlighting the positives too. I do hope that we shall have the pleasure of welcoming you again and should that opportunity arise please contact me personally in advance as I would like to make some gesture to make up for your disturbed evening.
