“Great time, great people”

I spent 5 nights at Juma Lodge with my wife, sister, and two adult children. Here's what I said to them in an e-mail:
Obrigado. Thanks again for making our stay a wonderful experience. I greatly appreciate the efforts of the entire staff to make us feel comfortable and relaxed. The entire experience exceeded our expectations. I especially appreciated Haulys' knowledge, and expertise (despite his encouraging me to eat a grub from a coconut). Feel free to provide my e-mail to anyone from the US asking about staying at Juma Lodge. Rodger
It is NOT a "touristy" luxury site but we were VERY comfortable. Electricity is available 6 PM to 7 AM or so and again for 1-2 hrs in early afternoon. That's all you need to charge things and read at night. Otherwise, you'll be out and about in the jungle on scheduled activities that allow exploration of the Amazon jungle. Juma river pH is low so mosquito larvae can't survive. Bugs were only a problem on hikes and the staff very carefully identified those activities that might require repellant. Food was plentiful and varied enough that we all ate well. The place is small enough to feel intimate; but there were enough other guests that we had a nice time meeting people from New York, Brazil, Australia, and other countries. Each group was assigned to a guide who spoke their language when going out on a boat or hike. Our guide (Hauly) even invided my son to join them in a soccer game in a nearby village area. My sister is battling a serious illness and the staff (without prompting) noted this right away and was especially helpful and attentive. Write me if you want more information: RodgerAS@aol.com

“Fantastic place and people”

We stayed at the lodge in mid December 2011 for 4 days and 3 nights. We were collected promptly at Manaus airport and taken by minibus/boats to the Lodge. Haulys our guide was with us for the whole transfer and was very informative. He speaks very good English. He gave a good speech at 'The Meeting Of The Waters', and explained lots to us.
Once we arrived at the Lodge we were shown around by Haulys. The whole Lodge was well organised, clean, friendly, and relaxed.
The food was excellent every mealtime! All food was fresh and well presented.
We hired our own boat and guide (Ralf) for two whole days, and spent this time fishing. Ralf was also fantastic!! He spoke very good English and couldn’t do enough to make sure that we caught fish. We caught mostly Tucunare (Peacock Bass) but also Piranha, Aruana, Traira, and Mandi.
If you enjoy fishing i strongly recommend this experience. Take your own fishing equipment with a good selection of artificial lures as most of the time you will be casting in search of Tucunare. Also i recommend that you request Ralf as your guide, due to his knowledge and good humour. We were told that the best time for fishing is late September and October.
We had no problems with mosquitoes in the daytime, just a little problem at night when we were fishing by lamplight on the pontoon (so take insect repellant just in case).

The 'naughty' monkeys are no longer at the lodge, but there were 2 others that were quite shy.

My other general recommendations are to take lightweight waterproofs on any boat trip as it can suddenly rain at anytime, take a good torch for emergencies (and use for fishing at night), take your preferred soft toilet paper, and take a water bottle that you can fill up daily in the restaurant.

On our way back to Manaus, my brazilian friend ,that i was travelling with, spoke to the boat driver and arranged for us to visit a small floating fish sanctuary just before arrival in Manaus. At this sanctuary we were able to see the large Piraracu in an enclosure and we were able to fish for them using their heavy duty rod/line/bait but with no hook. Good fun to try to lift the large fish (approx 80 kilos) ! Only cost 5 Reals per person plus fee to boat driver.

I would really recommend the Juma Lodge to anyone wishing to experience the Amazon, but with the safety and knowledge of very good guides.
To make the most of your stay go on as many organised trips that are provided, make conversation with all the friendly staff, and other tourists. That way you will learn so much more!!

Haulys and Ralf thank you so much, and i hope to come back again one day soon.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the river so that you wake up to fantastic view!

“Incredible”

This lodge was without a doubt the highlight of my trip to Brazil. I spent four days there and each day was better than the day before. Our guide (Haulys) was the most knowledgeable person I could have imagined. He was able to point out every kind of flora or fauna around. He also just made the entire experience fun and relaxing.

The lodge itself was beautiful and the food was amazing. The staff was so attentive and took care of anything you could possibly need.

I cannot recommend this lodge enough.

The only odd and disappointing part of this was the monkeys. There are two house monkeys who roam free. I realize a lot people probably think they are fun and cute, but they seemed to be pretty detrimental to the lodge. They destroy everything they can get their hands on. The worst part of it is that it seems to bizarre that such an "eco-friendly" lodge would have them. They are not indiginous to the area so they are brought outside of their habitat and then domesticated. It seems really strange that they would have them here.

Other than the monkeys - this place is incredible

Hello Mr. Andrew Brennan

I would like to thank you very much for the great review about us!

Very good to know that Juma was the highlight of your stay in Brazil!

Regarding the monkeys, they are natives from the region and are set free. We cannot avoid their presence, but from November to now, the monkeys you probably met are not there anymore. They keep moving all the time, so right now we don´t know where they are.

We look forward to receive you again at Juma one day.

Best Regards,

Caio Fonseca

“Location, staff, and facilities all served to enhance our visit to a very unique part of the world.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We spent three nights here recently.

I was impressed with the trip to the lodge. Beginning at our hotel in Manaus we traveled by car, by boat, by VW microbus, and then again by boat to reach the lodge. All of the transfers were timely and well handled. The return was equally well handled.

During our stay we were treated nicely, well fed, and through the planned activities exposed to several different facets of the Amazon forest. This is high end eco-tourism. Juma was a great option for a visit to this part of the world.

“Professional operation in the middle of the Amazon.”

Stayed two nights which in my opinion is enough to enjoy most of the trips and activities. Location is three hours from Manaus - worthwhile trip if you want to enjoy an area which has not been affected by the massive deforestation. Professional operation from the transportation, guides and the lodge itself. Surprisingly bug- free. Clean rooms though be prepared for no hot water or air conditioning. Decent food for the middle of nowhere. Highly recommended for someone wanting to experience the jungle in a relatively comfortable place.
