I travelled to Kufri with my wife in March 2010... We stayed at the Kufri Holiday Resort for 2 nights. We are from Chennai...
Way to Kufri:
If you are starting from Delhi, better start early. We started around 11 AM and reached Kufri at 10:30 PM... Though the roads were fairly comfortable, the duration of travel made us weary... We started the climb up to Shimla at around 5:30 PM; the scenary was good. However, if you have roamed in the forests of Kerala/Karnataka, this would be a bit different, 'cause the trees and leaves have a paler and brown look compared to the dark green appearances down south (probably has something to do with the time of the year we went).
Location:
Kufri Holiday Resort is situated about 25 kms from Shimla and much higher as well. This resort is the highest point where one could stay at Kufri. This gives an amazing view on all sides of the resort. The resort itself is in 2 stages, a main building which houses a few rooms and the restaurant and a row of cottages at a higher level. But beware if you are reaching a bit late, the walk up to the cottages in the night can be a bit tedious with the stiff chill breeze and slippery steps.

Rooms and ambience:
We stayed at the Honeymoon Cottage which had a living room, a bedroom and a kitchen (kind of). The living room opens up to the walk way to other cottages, but the view from here is breath-taking, with the Himalayan range forming a white necklace around the horizon.
The cottage was too cold and a bit thinly furnished. There was only a little portable heater available in the bedroom and no centralised heating, probably because it was off season. Hot water availability is an issue too. The water is freezing chill at all times. Bed was a bit hard, but passable, the quality of spreads however was a little disappointing.
Out first night here was one of the most eerie ones in my life. There was no sign of any humans around our cottage after the attendents left us at the cottage. And the huge glass windows in the bedroom without grille and the occasional thud of a snow flake on the tin roof added to our fear. The next morning however, we realised there were a few people around.

Food:
We had our food served to our rooms on both days. Food was good and the service was pretty quick. The sandwiches were a little too oily and burnt, but the other items were pretty good. Rates were reasonalbe though.

Service:
Nothing out of the world, pretty ordinary. The staff were courteous but the place looked to be terribly understaffed. We requested for hot water on the second day as the heater did not work. We had it delivered as we were checking out after having our bath in the freezing water. Considering we had paid pretty heavily we expected the service to be little better.

Activities within the resort:
We spent most of the day sightseeing and going further up in Kufri on a Pony, we did not have much time to spend in the resort. However, there are a lot of places to visit around Kufri, and should make it very exciting to stay here.
Rating: N/A
This trip was the start to our frequent outings. We were pretty naive and amatuerish. We were unaware of a few things to look out for when travelling. Kufri was a much better option to stay compared to the cramped spaces in Shimla.
Careful when you are riding a pony for the first time, it will walk through very narrow, slippery path, you need to maintain balance for it to maintain balance..! :) Ensure to take your camera chargers, you will keep clicking away, there are so many beautiful places around this area.
Ensure to visit Narkanda as well when you are in Shimla, we missed it.
