Walking the gently winding path from Ulpotha's entry I was overcome by a sense of calm that only deepened the longer I stayed. There is something profoundly healing, something that counters all the violence and senselessness of modern city living. Such care is given to every detail, its as if you're living a communal work of art. Passing time here you risk the return of all those utopic ideals you'd filed away long ago. Ulpotha has something more than the sum of its parts which is difficult to describe, it has to be experienced. It goes beyond the lakeside setting, the delicious food, the wonderful presence of the villagers and the yoga, massage and ayurvedic treatments. Perhaps there's a link to another time, or perhaps its altogether beyond time.

I went to Ulpotha on an organised yoga retreat with www.appleyoga.com.... what an amazing place.... the whole experience is something I would love to repeat, its truely magical and heaven on earth..... I had a five day detox during my stay and had the most sublime Ayurvedic treatments... Ulpotha has left a special place in my heart and I hope to visit again in the future...

Room Tip: Remember to bring earplugs as the wildlife can be a somewhat noisey.... but it all adds to the exper...

“I wish I were back there!”

I stayed at Ulpotha for one week at the beginning of their winter season and it was just what I needed. Since returning, I've found it difficult to describe to friends what Ulpotha is exactly. It's more than just a retreat or an eco-lodge, and there is so much thought and care put into the whole project and Ayurvedic center.
I met some wonderful fellow guests, spent a lot of time getting to know kitchen staff there who were wonderful (I'm in the restaurant business, so I like to hang out in kitchens), and felt all the previous year's stress fall off my shoulders each day. It really set the tone for the rest of a fantastic trip alone in Sri Lanka and helped me to rediscover the basic essence of yoga that had eluded me for some time.

I plan to return for a longer stay in the future when I can get away to that part of the world again!

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to share a room with a fellow guest you don't know. It's nice to have t...

“Paradise on Earth”

I have been to Ulpotha twice and I hope to go there again and again. The food is the best I've ever had and the atmosphere is incredibly healing. The lake is divine, and the yoga classes, ayurvedic treatments give you the true meaning of good health.

“More than just a yoga holiday, an extremely memorable experience”

It is hard to know where to start in my review of Ulpotha and my two week yoga holiday in the beautiful village. The whole holiday was more than I ever expected in terms of the location, the accommodation, the food and of course, the yoga!

The traditional working Sri Lankan village is in a stunning location that is nothing short of magical. Boulder-like mountains encompass the area, and an absolutely stunning freshwater lake provides the perfect place to sit and relax as well as to swim and cool off throughout the day. There is no electricity and mobile reception is scant, so it is actually posisble to switch off and unplug completely while staying in Ulpotha.

The communal meals are delicious and made with love- mostly all vegan, and all vegetarian, I was very impressed with the quality and love with which it was made. I even had a chance to hang out in the kitchen one morning and was amazed at how such delicious food was made using just a fire-lit stove top.

As well as doing yoga twice a day, it is possible to take long walks or bike rides through the village, or to do traditional ayurveda detox treatments. Included in the package is also a weekly massage from very good therapists.

We did a day trip to the dea and a half day trip to a nearby (ish) former monastery which were nice escapes frfom the village. I was also lucky to experience a traditional Sri Lankan wedding which was nothing short of amazing to experience. The delightful host Suzi looks after your every need an ensures everything runs smoothly and that evereyone is happy and comfortable.

Ulpotha is an inspiring place, and even if you are not into yoga, it is worth staying in Ulpotha to completely switch off and relax.

Room Tip: The rooms are simple, traditional mud huts, so expect a few creepy crawlies and elements of nature i...
