It is hard to know where to start in my review of Ulpotha and my two week yoga holiday in the beautiful village. The whole holiday was more than I ever expected in terms of the location, the accommodation, the food and of course, the yoga!
The traditional working Sri Lankan village is in a stunning location that is nothing short of magical. Boulder-like mountains encompass the area, and an absolutely stunning freshwater lake provides the perfect place to sit and relax as well as to swim and cool off throughout the day. There is no electricity and mobile reception is scant, so it is actually posisble to switch off and unplug completely while staying in Ulpotha.
The communal meals are delicious and made with love- mostly all vegan, and all vegetarian, I was very impressed with the quality and love with which it was made. I even had a chance to hang out in the kitchen one morning and was amazed at how such delicious food was made using just a fire-lit stove top.
As well as doing yoga twice a day, it is possible to take long walks or bike rides through the village, or to do traditional ayurveda detox treatments. Included in the package is also a weekly massage from very good therapists.
We did a day trip to the dea and a half day trip to a nearby (ish) former monastery which were nice escapes frfom the village. I was also lucky to experience a traditional Sri Lankan wedding which was nothing short of amazing to experience. The delightful host Suzi looks after your every need an ensures everything runs smoothly and that evereyone is happy and comfortable.
Ulpotha is an inspiring place, and even if you are not into yoga, it is worth staying in Ulpotha to completely switch off and relax.
