Our son had booked our break as a Christmas present, so off we headed to the Portsonachan Hotel.
As previous posts have highlighted, the location is a bit remote, and the outside of the main building is a bit tatty and tired looking, but a fresh coat of paint would smarten it up. The hotel which reminded me of an older style officers mess which had seen better days was busy, but the only staff we saw the whole weekend to cater for quite a lot of guests were the same two waiting staff, a Spaniard, and a Romanian, and a barman who was Hungarian.
The standard of food at dinner and breakfast was really good, but the dining room was very cold despite an open fire, most diners keeping jackets and coats on.
The hotel lounge had old fashioned leather armchairs and setees, and there was a lovely open fire, so sitting in there chatting to other guests and having a drink was really nice.
Overall we had a pretty nice weekend away, but it was the wee things that were missing, like milk jugs on your table at breakfast, and the inconsistencies in the level of service which let the place down.
Would we return to the Portsonachan Hotel again, well to quote the great Kenny Dalglish, mibees aye, mibees naw.
