“Great B&B/location/views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

Both Dave & Jackie made our recent stay at Grindon Farm very special. We were on a trip to the North to delve into some family history, and were so very welcoming and genuinely interested in our quest for knowledge of past ancestors.
Our accommodation was bright and spacious - with views far and wide - a real treat to eat a hearty breakfast overlooking such dramatic countryside (sadly no Marmite..but I do travel with my own for such emergencies!).
Jackie was most kind in organising a tea tray, along with her delicious shortbread biscuits for a visit by a local editor of Hexham News - we spent a most enjoyable 45 mins chatting and drinking tea enjoying the stunning vista - imagining past ancestors very near to this spot!

Having been in the building industry for many years and with particular expertise in installing luxury bathrooms (no, it isn't a 'plug' honest!) our only niggle was the inadequacy of the bathroom and subsequent dampness and humidity in the bathroom and bedroom. We found the 'wet room' to be badly fitted - thus literally everything in the bathroom would get a shower also - including the toilet/towels/bin even the toilet roll which made for a slightly complicated bathing procedure of leaving towels/anything one didn't want to get wet outside of the bathroom. It reminded me slightly of camping holidays many years ago (not good). I appreciate we did report this on our first morning and were told very politely that they were awaiting the electrician to mend the fan in bathroom. - and were also kindly offered use of bathroom of the room next door (however, we didn't take up very kind offer as felt it would mean two bathrooms to be cleaned) - and w were only there for three nights. Due to the continual build up of damp from the bathroom the damp/smelly atmosphere seemed to permeate the bedroom too which was quite unpleasant - and possibly an ongoing problem with a little mould on the walls/damp collection box in the corners of bedroom. - Seemed such a shame as everything was so spick and span otherwise. However, as I say our hosts did very kindly offer an alternative bathroom and did apologise for non working of fan, so this isn't a complaint - just a comment and view from someone who knows bathrooms! - :0)
We would have no hesitation in recommending this lovely B&B to any friends who are visiting the area .
Thank you to you both for our time in Grindon Farm.

Room Tip: Beautiful B&B as mentioned in review - possibly ask if 'wet room' fan/shower has been ad...

“Relaxing stay prior to Strenuous Great North Run”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

Both my wife and I found this Gem as we wanted to stay West of Newcastle prior to the Great North Run rather than driving up from Wigan on the morning.
David and Jackie were really lovely people, welcoming and attentative. They have spent some money on giving the customer all mod cons. Breakfast is wonderful, with relaxing calm views, to start your day off.
We would have stayed after the race but working early Monday resulted in us driving South after the race.
Its ideal for the best parts of Hadrians Wall, Hexham races, and Newcastle is very close too, We will stay here again.
Thanks Mike & Rachel x

“Hadrians Bike trip - Great choice of accommodation.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

We stayed here on a couple of days ago and so I wanted to write a review whilst my memory is fresh.
Grindon Cartshed can be found approx 1 mile off the Hadrians Route 72, however if you think you have overcome the hills and it is an easy free wheel down to the farm think again. We had no energy left but had to overcome a couple of extra hills which we hadn't accounted for! Such is life.

The Cartshed and farm area is stunning and the views amazing. It is so remote and peaceful up there and travelling as a group with bikes it is perfect. Dave has a little barn area with drying room to store the bikes and he kindly let us use his hose pipe to wash the bikes down. Dave and his wife are very welcoming.

The accommodation is first class in every respect, top quality furniture, WiFi and lovely comfy beds and duvets. They really have paid a lot of attention to detail. The breakfast was top notch too.

We ate dinner at a local pub (The Twice Brewed) ,just a short taxi journey away. There were six of us, and so the taxi had to make return journeys, but even bearing that in mind, four journeys came to a total of £25! Very reasonable indeed.

We would definitely use the Cartshed again and highly recommend it for anyone doing this trip.

Thanks!

Room Tip: All the rooms here are lovely and Dave will put up a camp bed if needed for an extra person / child.

“We could not have asked for better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

Staying here was a pleasure. Everything from the welcome tea onwards was excellent. The owner, Jackie could not have been more helpful. It's the perfect location from which to explore Hadrian's Wall and the surrounding area. Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum are only a short drive away. Some great pubs in the local area too. We had a lovely room and the breakfast next morning was excellent. We stayed here for two nights and could not have asked for better.

“The Old Farmhouse for wheelchair users”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

For wheelchair users this is a great place to stay. We were here for two weeks and the facilities were very good and easy to use. Adjustable beds, spacious rooms, excellent cooking and washing facilities; very warm, very clean, very comfortable and welcoming. A hoist can be hired and was there for us when we arrived.
My partner is wheelchair-bound so anything that makes life easier for me is most welcome!
The location is ideal for touring Northumberland and enjoying the beautiful scenery and wealth of places to visit - Kielder Water, Durham Cathedral, Blanchland, Alnwick garden, Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge, Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum, Hexham, Belsay Castle and gardens, Wallington garden, Lanercost Priory, Gibside, the Bowes Museum, were some of the places we visited.
Our thanks to Jackie and Dave for providing such comfortable and wheelchair-friendly accommodation in such delightful and tranquil surroundings and for making our stay so enjoyable.
Last but not least, an enchanting greater spotted woodpecker came to feed at the bird-table every day - a joy to watch. We nicknamed him Bede as he was a Venerable Bird.
