We have just returned from the Agalos Studios in Kolios and we had a wonderful time. Alex, the owner was a great host and greeted our worried questions about air conditioning (can't sleep without it) and the safe (paranoid about crime) with 'Relax, you are on holiday, go and unpack and then come down to the bar and have a drink.' Which we did. Yes, the air conditioning comes at a price- but then it always does- and all the safes have the same combination (no charge for this) but I still had peace of mind. Actually one day we forgot to lock the safe but nothing went missing. Anyway, on one of our trips into the old part of Skiathos I counted 3 sets of house keys on the outside of front doors-if the Greeks weren't worried, why should I be?
We had a large studio- the biggest I have ever stayed in, and a lovely balcony from which we could see the pool and the beach. The room was cleaned every day except Sundays and I lost count of clean towels and changes of sheets. The kitchen was small but had ample equipment- we don't go on holiday to cook 3 course meals-and although the units were a bit worn they were fine. The bathroom was compact but served its purpose and I have yet to find a Greek shower that maintains a constant temperature, so no surprises there.
The pool area was fine and Alex did clean the pool every day. There were plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, although some of these had seen better days, but so what?
The studios are close to the main road but we did not find traffic noise to be a problem and slept very well, a miracle in itself as we were so relaxed we spent large parts of each day asleep round the pool or on the beach!
Alex makes fantastic cocktails and is very good company. He is an intelligent, charming man and is full of information and very interesting to talk to. We have read the unpleasant review about him and it is insulting and untrue.
Kolios is a tiny place with a couple of supermarkets, a few tavernas- we loved the taverna on the beach (Shirley Valentine moment), Infinity Blue-quite posh, lovely food and Stathis-turn right onto the road and walk up the hill. 10 minutes walk to the left brings you to Paraskevi, more tavernas-Jimmy's is lovely and the Platanas bar-comfy chairs and candlelight. The main road is scary at night- no pavements and you need to have your wits about you!
The bus stop is right outside the studios and we caught the bus a few times during the day to go into Skiathos. You have no chance at night as the buses are packed by the time they reach Kolios and unless you fancy being a sardine get a taxi- you can flag these down.
We went on two boat trips- don't go through your tour operator- do it yourself. Take the 2 island trip to Skopelos and Alonissos-25 euros each and also the round the island one for 20 euros each- both fantastic experiences.
This holiday was 'just what we were looking for' in every respect and we wish Alex luck when he goes it alone next year. We will be recommending it to our friends. All I can say is, thanks, Alex for a wonderful, memorable holiday- we wish we were still there.
