“A great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

My wife and I booked this hotel at a bargain price cand was offered half board at a small extra cost thinking if the evening meal was no good we would not lose much.
The hotel was clean and the rooms were large with seating area, balcony and a large fridge. They were serviced every day.
The breakfast was a buffet style and a combination of 'english' and portugese food. The evening meal, which was to be a buffet was actually from the a la carte menu at no extra cost. There too few guests eating in the evening to make the buffet worthwhile. The food was very good indeed!
The hotel seems to have several names - we had booked under Club House Casa Velha Da Luz and beleive it is now called something else.
We would definately go back there.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the central amenities area.

“Excellent hotel, shame about the sunbeds and pool towels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We last stayed in Luz 25 years ago and have since stayed in most of the resorts on Algarve. My only regret we didn't return to Luz earlier as it is still the beautiful quiet resort I remember, despite lots more accommadation there are no horrible high rise. The hotel is in a quiet position, but only a few minutes walk to the beach and to the many great restaurants. We stayed in room 107 which was on the upper floor and was quite spacious with a fridge that was really cold (a bit of a rarity in European rooms we have found!) Our balcony overlooked the pools and grounds and was in the sun most of the day, so ideal for a pre dinner drink.
We stayed B&B and the breakfast was very good with plenty of choice.
One quibble about the hotel was, as mentioned in previous reviews, the sunbeds. They were unbelievably uncomfortable and I found it impossible to sit read in a comfortable position and my back really ached when lying down. They were also very shabby looking. If they weren't bad enough, the pool towels we hired were little more than thin hand towels! Not only did we have to pay 10 euros refundable deposit (as though anyone would want to pinch them!), we also had to pay a daily charge of 2 euros per towel. Not what I would expect from a 4* hotel. Little wonder there were only ever 2 other people at the pool area.
Such a shame because that spoilt an otherwise excellent hotel and lets hope when we visit again, these faults have been rectified.

Room Tip: For privacy, do not choose ground floor. Couldn't fault our room 107.

“retreat in the sun”

This was just an half term break away hoping for a little sun. From start to finish it was just splendid .Thomas Cook had a mini bus waiting which was just for the two of us.We arrived at our accommodation in 45 mins. Arriving at 10 am we were told the apartment was not yet ready but we could leave our luggage and use the facilities or take a stroll to the beach. We took a lovely stroll in the sun to the beach. Pria da Luz is such a pretty resort with beautiful clean beach. There is enough good restaurants to keep your taste buds happy. On returning one hour later the accommadation was ready. There was a lift available as we were on the second floor no need to carry your luggage up stairs. The apartment was spacious and clean over looking one of the pools. Breakfast was plentiful with a great choice loved the selection of fresh fruit and lovely breads and pastery;s. All the staff were friendly and nothing too much trouble. These apartments will not disappoint you just lovely surroundings and everything from tennis courts turkish baths sauna and massage. TIPS..There was no hairdrier ask at reception they will give you one. Take a cork screw if you want to drink wine in your room. The local Catholic church has English mass at 7.00pm Saturday night.

“clean. comfortable hotel shame about food in evening”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

When I first looked at this hotel I read somewhere on this site that it is only 24 km from airport I can assure you it is at least 50 miles from the airport and if you are on a package holiday it can take up to 3 hours to reach with all the drop offs!!
When we arrived first impressions great hotel very clean and well kept we were in room 105 in the first block just upstairs across from reception . The room was spotless 2 singles beds as is usual ,decent size bathroom , balcony which all look into the pool areas , aircon (included without charge) and fridge and the safe . The pool area was very clean and tidy although the sunbeds are very uncomfortable, there is a pool side bar which was open when we were there but was closing on the 24/10/11 and I dont know if they would be proving food from hotel at lunch times.
The breakfast was great the usual bacon, eggs, sausages etc.. and plenty of although sometimes colder than would have liked but hard to keep things warm . I enjoyed the coffee which is the usual when out of machines . Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the food at night the soup was fine but did not enjoy any of the rest of the main dishes and if you have fussy kids then the only thing was chips . There was very little choice but as the hotel has only 78 rooms of which only half would have been used any more would have been wasted. And we weren't the only ones not happy with the food we spoke to serveral people who ate out alot because they didnt like the food.
The great thing about the hotel especially for families was the laundry with washing machine (5 euros) powder (1 euro) tumble dryer , micro wave and iron and board!
If you have kids then there isnt much for them to do and there was only entertainment on a sunday and wednesday night which wasnt really up to much .
The staff were great at was always the same staff on because it was such a small place which made it better and no cueing for the toast and coffee machines.
The town is very small but only 5 mins from hotel but has very few shops there is a few restaurants and a few pubs and we will definately go back to Portugal but a livelier place and closer to the airport as we had to leave at 2.30am for a 7.30 flight .
Praia da Luz was lovely but too quiet for us. The beach looked nice but was told for 2 beds and umbrella it was 16 euros so just stayed at hotel.
If you want a very relaxing holiday I would advise B & B and maybe earlier in the year .

Room Tip: they all face the pool areas but some and on the ground hiden behind bushes so ask for the top floor...

“Relaxing and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Enjoyed a week here at end of September with great weather. We had a superior room on top floor in main block which had plenty of space an decent facilities. Pool complex provided plenty of space although pool bar is pricey and rather slow. Excellent breakfast buffet for all tastes although I wish they changed the music more often - Wham's 'Last Christmas' gets a bit tedious in October!

The beach is lovely but the Atlantic breakers prevent swimming most of the time.

Excellent choice of restaurants spread around the town - Lote1, Dolphin, Lime Tree, Onda, Atlantico, O Antonio were all good quality although only the last three were Portugese themed.

We'd go there again.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor in main block - not overlooked and balcony gets sun later in day.
