“Terrible disappointment - and so disorganised!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2011

Selborne is not somewhere I would want to return. Things were going wrong from before arrival. Paying was an absolute disaster. Coming from overseas, we expected to be able to pay on credit card but this has only just been introduced so we were expected to bank transfer. Easier said than done. Despite the huge inconvenience of having to make an international deposit for a relatively small amount, Selborne continuously seemed to question whether the funds have been paid and threatened to cancel our booking. Their accounts department (charming named Debt Collection) is disorganised and we were asked to provide proof on many occasions of our payment because clearly Selborne couldn't find it. Hugely inconvenient, dozens of emails and no way to treat clients.

Upon arrival into one of their self catering units, we were disappointed to find it is nothing more than a generic housing estate box. Having stepped in the door you could be in Houston, Sydney, Dagenham. What, we're in Africa? As sterile as a lobotomist's knife. Design by numbers, back of a fag packet. The lack of imagination is astounding. Would at least be nice to have some pictures on the walls? Or mirrors that aren't at arms length so ladies can do their make up?

Check in was good with friendly staff who presented us with the nine, yes nine, keys on a ring, heaven knows what for -we only used one for the villa front door. Reception closed at the weekend. Despite having been told we could arrive from 10, housekeeping still hadn't delivered soap and loo roll by 4 and no one had thought to turn on the hot water. Huge list of what one can't do when here, so unwelcoming. And we were unable to eat outside in the evening because the light didn't work. There is no dining table in the house so we were forced to bring the outside table in. Huge living area-great for tv dinners which perhaps satisfies their regular clientele, but we would have appreciated a decent space for dining.

On the plus side, the villa was well equipped, the gardens are lovely, the people working there are very friendly and it is very close to the N2 (in viewing distance and easy earshot). A local convenience store with delightful staff and excellent Pennington Old Irish marmalade is a short drive away. The golf course also looks lovely and well maintained.

It's not the most expensive accommodation in RSA but it's far pricier than it should be. We are pretty unimpressed and shall not be returning.

“Great for active families”

We stayed in one of the villas that allowed us more flexibility with our kiDs. Great activities when it is not ideal beach weather such as golf, cycling and tennis. There are several pools around the estate and the kids especially enjoyed the beach house pool - a few meters from the beach. Well worth it for busy families

“Bliss, absolute bliss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2010

A beautiful hotel set peacefully by the golf course. Lovely food & wine. Room large & well furnished but dark as the lush vegetation actually touched the balcony. On the + side, this kept the room cool. Service was very good, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Large bathroom with toiletries but the floor was VERY slippery, (no non-slip mat available.) If it is rest & relaxation you are looking for, this is for you. Suggest you take an umbrella as the rooms are a 5 minute walk from the restaurant & lounge & we had quite a lot of rain when we were there in March. It is also worth taking a torch. Nearest village is about 2 miles away, too far to walk in the heat but lovely walks aound the golf course. In a setence, " this holiday was to die for. "

“Good location spoilt by real lack of attention to detail”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2009

We stayed here recently as it was an excellent location for my husband to go scuba diving at Aliwal Shoals. Although there are closer hotels to this dive location they do not seem to be of a very high standard. Also, as a mother with a young baby we wanted to be able to use a nice pool and go out for walks during the day on the local golf course.

Unfortunately the stay did not live up to expectations, especially considering the other hotels in the chain are pretty well known and have good reputations. The hotel has good potential, the golf course looked very well maintained and the building itself is lovely. The staff were also friendly but the overall experience of our stay was that the hotel has some way to go before it will leave a polished impression and a hotel we would like to return to.

On checking in we had a discrepancy with our dates - there had been some going backwards and forwards with emails and unfortunately our final confirmation was not noted. Nevertheless, not a problem and our stay was accommodated. On arrival in the room (nice and spacious but quite dark due to the amount of trees around the buildings, good size bed) we had a number of problems which were eventually sorted after numerous phone calls. Eg.. the safe was already locked and would not open, no hair dryer to which house keeping told me there was nothing they could do - great long wet hair at dinner (!) - had to ask a manager to resolve this, then no adapter to the hair dryer, this plug then didn't work, the crib for the baby had to be requested twice and in the night it half collapsed - although replaced the next day, had to request further towels, which really had seen better days).

We only ate once in the restaurant and chose a buffet. We were disappointed with the quality of the food and were also not asked if we wanted any drinks with our meal. The other times we ate in the room and the food was ok. The service at breakfast, although friendly was not very speedy, often having to ask for tea/coffee, butter, jam, toast etc.. or even to leave the table to find someone to ask.

As my husband was diving it then came to light that he could have a breakfast pack (not mentioned the first day although the hotel knew he was leaving each morning at 6.30am as they had booked it). On the third day he requested only some fruit and a muffin in his pack - the chef was not happy to let him go without a full pack and insisted he wait, after 20 minutes this arrived but was told there were no muffins (I then had these with my breakfast though...).

We had a good babysitter on a couple of mornings but lack of English was not helpful in explaining what was required. However she did a good job in keeping him entertained. I would say that I took it for granted that the babysitter would remain in our room or stay at the children's centre near the pool but on one occasion he was taken outside a management office in a part of the grounds I did not know you could get to. Not far from the pool where I was but I had to be pointed in the right direction by some other guests after starting to panic. The babysitter had been called into a meeting and someone else was looking after our baby. A manager came out and told me she would only be half an hour and offered for someone else to look after him. As it would not be long I said I would take him for while rather than him having to get to know someone else new. However, this half an hour turned into over an hour and the poor babysitter had come in on her day off to look after him. I then felt obliged to pay her for this hour as I was not convinced the hotel would compensate her for this. This situation was not well managed.

Finally, the hotel pool was rather dirty round the edges and could do with a good clean. The pool loungers and beds were left where ever they had been used each day.

Overall, too many things to complain about about in a hotel of this standard. Many of these things should be done automatically and not even be a concern to a paying guest.

“Selborne golf hotel - a little gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2009

We have been to South Africa many times but this was the first visit to this hotel. Easy to find, well under an hour from Durban, south on the N4.

First impressions were good but not outstanding. However, as the days progressed (4 days, 3 nights there) it really grew on us. Service and friendliness of the staff simply coud not be faulted. By far the best being the restaurant with it's jovial manageress! Absolutely nothing was too much trouble for the staff here and food was outstanding, as well as cheap (by UK standards)!

The primary reason to visit was to have a relaxed start to a long holiday and play some golf. Imagine our surprise when we first played, only to find devastation in many areas of th course (but it was still immaculate, where possible). They had been unlucky to be on the receiving end of two lots of (rare) horrific weather in a short period late last year. They had almost rebuilt all the damaged areas when the second flood arrived. Absolutely everything was being done by the devastated staff to bring it back to it's former beauty so by the time you go there it may be finished. If not, don't worry as you will still enjoy it!

A more tranquil and calming oasis is difficult to imagine and it even has it's own beach club with secure access. Stunning beach!

We left this wonderful place, fresh and relaxed and looking forward to returning.
