“De-stress package increases stress level”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

To celebrate my youngest sisters 40th my older sister and I treated her to a day at the spa - booked 3 de-stress packages. On arrival instead of a friendly welcome we were informed that due to staff shortages only 2 of 3 treatments could be done. We explained that this did not suit us - and asked why we were not advised - apparently they did not have my number which was nonsense. We then waited 30 min before being told that a plan had been made. My sister and I had a double room -looked as if it had been prepared in a rush as bathroom filthy. Treatments that followed were mediocre -the mani and pedi were very poor - heals not filed, nail polish applied shoddily. The 4 hour de-stress treatment lasted less than 3 hours, we felt rushed throughout. I did not haggle over payment in front of my sister whose birthday we were celebrating as I did not want to further spoil her spa experience. I paid the full amount R1000 per package, I was not offered a discount, nor was any apologies offered for treatments cut short. Our booking was handled in a most unprofessional manner, and the treatments we received were not from trained the staff. In closing I don't recommend this spa.

To whom it may concern

Firstly allow me to apologise profusely for the poor service you received at our Spa.

You should definitely have been called and advised that one of our spa staff had failed to arrive for work that morning at 8 o'clock. Unfortunately, as your booking was for 8:30, the Spa manager advised me that she did not have time to call you before you arrived.

The matter of poor quality workmanship has been addressed with the Spa staff, and I would like to offer you a complimentary treatment when you are next in the area, if you feel that this would in some small way make up for our failings during your last visit.

Please contact me directly should you wish to take up the offer.

“Excellent”

Just returned from a weeks stay here, despite the weather we had a great stay. The location was great only an hour from the airport and 40 mins to Durban, there was lots to do locally, like Oribi gorge. The golf course on the estate is lovely and a very good test. Good on-site restaurant and not to far to go for additional restaurants in the local towns.

“Terrible disappointment - and so disorganised!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2011

Selborne is not somewhere I would want to return. Things were going wrong from before arrival. Paying was an absolute disaster. Coming from overseas, we expected to be able to pay on credit card but this has only just been introduced so we were expected to bank transfer. Easier said than done. Despite the huge inconvenience of having to make an international deposit for a relatively small amount, Selborne continuously seemed to question whether the funds have been paid and threatened to cancel our booking. Their accounts department (charming named Debt Collection) is disorganised and we were asked to provide proof on many occasions of our payment because clearly Selborne couldn't find it. Hugely inconvenient, dozens of emails and no way to treat clients.

Upon arrival into one of their self catering units, we were disappointed to find it is nothing more than a generic housing estate box. Having stepped in the door you could be in Houston, Sydney, Dagenham. What, we're in Africa? As sterile as a lobotomist's knife. Design by numbers, back of a fag packet. The lack of imagination is astounding. Would at least be nice to have some pictures on the walls? Or mirrors that aren't at arms length so ladies can do their make up?

Check in was good with friendly staff who presented us with the nine, yes nine, keys on a ring, heaven knows what for -we only used one for the villa front door. Reception closed at the weekend. Despite having been told we could arrive from 10, housekeeping still hadn't delivered soap and loo roll by 4 and no one had thought to turn on the hot water. Huge list of what one can't do when here, so unwelcoming. And we were unable to eat outside in the evening because the light didn't work. There is no dining table in the house so we were forced to bring the outside table in. Huge living area-great for tv dinners which perhaps satisfies their regular clientele, but we would have appreciated a decent space for dining.

On the plus side, the villa was well equipped, the gardens are lovely, the people working there are very friendly and it is very close to the N2 (in viewing distance and easy earshot). A local convenience store with delightful staff and excellent Pennington Old Irish marmalade is a short drive away. The golf course also looks lovely and well maintained.

It's not the most expensive accommodation in RSA but it's far pricier than it should be. We are pretty unimpressed and shall not be returning.

“Great for active families”

We stayed in one of the villas that allowed us more flexibility with our kiDs. Great activities when it is not ideal beach weather such as golf, cycling and tennis. There are several pools around the estate and the kids especially enjoyed the beach house pool - a few meters from the beach. Well worth it for busy families

“Bliss, absolute bliss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2010

A beautiful hotel set peacefully by the golf course. Lovely food & wine. Room large & well furnished but dark as the lush vegetation actually touched the balcony. On the + side, this kept the room cool. Service was very good, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Large bathroom with toiletries but the floor was VERY slippery, (no non-slip mat available.) If it is rest & relaxation you are looking for, this is for you. Suggest you take an umbrella as the rooms are a 5 minute walk from the restaurant & lounge & we had quite a lot of rain when we were there in March. It is also worth taking a torch. Nearest village is about 2 miles away, too far to walk in the heat but lovely walks aound the golf course. In a setence, " this holiday was to die for. "
