“An extremely fortunate last minute booking!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

A last minute booking for the Ludlow Appartment for the first half term weekend was extremely fortunate. Despite arriving much later than promised we were greeted by Gill on the doorstep and directed to the private parking.

The traditional quirkiness referred to in other reviews suited us very well as did the facilities both in the appartment and in Bishops Castle.
The appartment's modern kitchen with its view of the main street was more than adequate with clean microwave, fridge, electric oven and hob.
The bathroom had been painstakingly restored showing some of the original wattle and dorb on the wall. There was piping hot water and fluffy towels.

My teenage son enjoyed the Wifi and the tv in his room.

We all enjoyed the pubs in BC, the surrounding countryside walking and the free voucher for the Sol Deli situated next door.

I would definitely recommend the Porch House. I look forward to going back soon.

The only person with the same opinion as me reviewed the Clun appartment last June. We have just spent a week there. Lets start on a positive note , free wifi , clean sheets , powerful shower . As for the rest !! No door on the bathroom (the loo faces the bed -(there is a flimsy curtain) , grey, rough towels , stained bath mat, the toilet flush doesn't always work (when I mentioned it to Gill the reply was 'I know' ) and the shower head is almost impossible to stand under, nowhere to dry towels . The bedroom floor is so sloping the cover keeps sliding off the bed (yes I know its an old house - ever heard of chocks?) The kitchen is poorly equipped ( we were paynig for a self catering appartment) It had one steamer pan ,one milk pan ,one frying pan and a rusty roasting tin. The toaster was filthy. The pub across the road is very noisy , yes it closes at 11pm but the noise of its customers continues much longer -1.30 am one night . The bedroom is above the lower flat's kitchen , so if you are unlucky (as we were) you can be kept awake at night or woken early mornings .
The town itself is great with some really good pubs and restaurants , try lunch in The Castle's beer garden , also the Boar's Head -great reasonably priced food with a lovely landlord.

“Great Country Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

We made the Porch House our home for a week and stayed in the upstairs Clun self-catering apartment. The owners, John & Gill, made us feel more than welcome. Bishop's Castle is an old town and may not be as spashy as nearby Shrewsbury. In many ways, it feels like a step back in time to old rural England. Even better, it provides an excellent base for exploring the many places of interest in the surrounding area. In the week we were here, we visited Shrewsbury, Ledbury, Mitchell's Fold, Attingham Park mansion, Wroxeter Roman ruins, Ironbridge Gorge, Helen's Manor at Much Marcle, Eastnor Castle, Stokesay Castle, Ludlow Castle, Clun Castle, and Much Wenlock. Who could ask for more -- except more time? The Clun apartment has been fully refurbished with all modern conveniences, including a wood burning stove. The kitchen was fully equipped and clean. WiFi reception was great and there's ample parking in the back. The shower is small, but the pressure is good and the water is hot. We found the bed and pillows very comfortable. There are two flat screen TVs – one in the bedroom and one in the living room – with Freeview channels. And a DVD player too. There's a great view of the rolling Shropshire hills out of the side window. People are very friendly in Bishop's Castle and locals far outnumber tourists, at least when festivals are not on the calendar. The Ganges Indian food restaurant up the the street is very good and reasonably priced. There's a Coop just down the street that opens at 7am. We recommend the Tiger baguette. The building dates from 1564 with many original parts. John will happily give you a complete tour. The size and shape of the Clun apartment is a little quirky, but that's half the fun. There's live music at the pub across the street once or twice a week, but it stops at 11pm so it's not really a bother. The High Street itself is pretty quiet. The Porch House is a wonderful old Elizabethan building with lots of history and provides great value. We recommend it highly for a country getaway.

Really nice night's sleep. Wonderful old building with lots of interesting period features... Really enjoyed staying here... Very friendly owners... Fantastic pub with Britain's oldest brewery just around the corner... ticked all the boxes really, what more can I say, except thank you for helping to make b&b's such a superb alternative to hotels!!!

“Cosy and calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2010

Excellent service and a very interesting place to stay.

We stayed in 'ludlow' for 3 nights and enjoyed it very much. We had no problems at all with noise and everything was as described.

The only issue was the shower which was difficult to get hot and the pressure wasn't great but there was plenty of hot water for a bath so not a major problem.

A lovely place stay and a wonderfully warm reception from very thoughtful hosts

Many thanks for your posting. We have taken on board your comment about the shower and have installed a pump so it is no longer a problem.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay.
