The good stuff first:
Dass Continental is located at a great location. Some of the corner rooms have fantastic views. Their room service is ok - Kerala dishes are very good, though. Room Assistants are courteous (but the warmth is missing.) Beds are large & fluffy. Bathrooms are clean & well-stocked. No complaints on that front.
The bad stuff:
Their breakfast is a big let-down. Lousy food, grouchy waiters (although the eager & courteous supervisors compensate) and always late (they will say 7 am, don't bother going before 07:30 am.)
Room service - good food and reasonably quick service, but on more than one occassion I have heard staff fighting in the background (When I travel, I sometimes ask for “Whatever is fresh” or “Whatever is the chefs special during dinnertime”) and in this hotel, I found the guy operating the phone trying his best to "get rid of this nosey customer" or bring him around to another dish.
Eventually someone who sees my way comes to the phone (usually the chef) and then, very warmly understands me & I get a great Kerala Fish (or other) dish which is very tasty. BUT this is not the way it should be.
My biggest grouse is that I have stayed here often & every time I come here, it's a new crew at the reception. For a tired, weary traveller, a familiar face that says, Welcome Mr. George, nice to see you again really takes a lot of the stress away - this bit is missing in Dass sorely (Although truth be told, not many of the other hotels have this either, barring probably the old Casino Hotel, which was a legend in itself)
Of late, I stay here only when I have no other choice. Dependable, but there are better alternatives.
So overall, you won't suffer at all if you stay here, but if you're more comfortable with another place, by all means, please stay there.
