Stay in Les Andelys but do not stay here. Bad food, rude staff and all-in over priced. Located in picturesque Petit Les Andelys on the banks of the Seine under Castle Gaillard this hotel should be a charming retreat (rivaling the near-by Cheine D'Or - stay here if you can) sadly it is not. As a Hotel-Restaurant the meal has to be taken with the room. The menu looked OK so we booked. At 60 Euro's the room was small but adequate, if you dont mind cigarette burned carpet and need ex-folliants - the towels do a great job. The evening meal was a disgrace & very poor value at Euro 34 each. Whilst the starter (fois gras 3 Euro extra) and cheese board were OK, the main course of Maigret de Canard was very fatty, soggy, tough and virtually inedible, the wine was OK but over priced. As we were unable to get any response from the humming sommolier or the elderly waitress, we struggled through - no English spoken. Breakfast was spartan, just bread and a croissant and portion pack jam. Next morning I complained reasonably in broken French to the proprietress, a formidable old women, but was just told I was the first complaint this season, she had 43 years experience and of course there could be nothing wrong with the Canard. Enter the chef who turns out to be her son. Attempts at reasonable discussion were met with abusive gesticualtion and a torrent of French which were I'm sorry to say reciprocated - in English. We could have been unlucky with the meal, but the management and staff response and attitude were totally unacceptable. This is without doubt the worst hotel I have experienced in France in 30 years! Very bad value at a total of Euro 168 for 2 for the night. One to avoid.
