Just returned from 10 days at Buena Onda. Five of us rented one of the two villas and did the All-Inclusive package, which is the only way to go. I've traveled extensively in Central and South America, and hands down, Buena Onda is number one!
Phillip, Sarah, and little Alana...as well as Connie, Chef Nadia and the rest of the staff went out of the way to ensure we had the best vacation possible. To start with, the house was cleaned daily, the ac was flowing, the 2.5 bathrooms (with two of the best showers going) + outdoor shower were more than enough, the beds incredibly comfortable, and the second floor deck with large table, cushioned bench, and hammock is the perfect spot to relax. A+.
The pool, where we spent many an hour is meticulously maintained and perfect to chill in and have a Tona time after a good surf. A+
Food is top-notch. Of my 30+ meals there, every single one was memorable. Personal favorites were the tropical plus (individually prepared fresh fruit, granola and yogurt) for breakfast and the Fish tacos or chicken sandwich for lunch. Every night boasted a different dinner special, all of which were amazing. Some examples were lobster tails, shrimp, red snapper fillet, world-class beef done on the outside grill and served personally by Phillip. All meals were accompanied by a dinner salad, fresh vegetables, and rice or potatoes. Buena Onda could seriously compete with the best restaurants by me in New Haven, CT or Rhode Island. A+
If you're going to surf, which most people do, it's a great spot. Playa Santana beach break is a two minute walk and super fun. A 20 minute walk in the other direction is Popoyo (although if you're doing the all-inclusive you'll get a ride). The all-inclusive package also got us a few boat trips to different breaks like Lance's Left and Playgrounds, as well as excellent fishing with Phillip and his captain Luis. In two hours we saw dolphins, a huge sailfish, and leather back turtles, and caught two amber jacks, a few mackerel, two tuna, and a mahi mahi. We brought the mackerel and mahi back, and the buena onda crew cooked them to perfection for us.
Another highlight of the all-inclusive was the photography session at Popoyo with Donald, who for as long as you're in the water has his lens trained on you and your friends. The next day everyone is handed a cd of all the photos...= awesome! A+
Out of the entire trip, what made it all work (aside from sun and waves), is Phillip, who went out of his way each day we were there to make our stay memorable. After a few days, he was one of the boys and was genuinely stoked to show us the sights of Grenada, take us to secret surf spots, go fishing, take us to the hot springs, or just chill.
He is the perfect guy to learn about and see Nicaragua, share some waves, have a bunch of laughs, and drink some tonas. Hats off to Buena Onda, Phillip and Sarah. Ouwi!!!!
Can't wait to return.
