At the recommendation of our friend, Jonathan Bird, we traveled with our friends with their 9yr old and our 8 and 10 yr old to Divers Lodge Lembeh from Boston. The diving was amazing. More critters than we ever imagined seeing. Coconut octopus, Giant Octopus, Blue Spotted Rays, Stonefish, multiple pygmy and common seahorses, nudibranchs mating, many different anemone fishes and anemones (including one with a spectacular purple mantle and one with a red mantle), peacock mantis shrimp, sea urchin carrying crab, multiple different crinoid and cucumber shrimp and coral crabs, frog fishes, ring tailed pipefishes, sea snakes, moray eels, soft coral, etc.... We hired a boat between the 2 couples and each had a 2:1 dive master ratio. Necessary for shooting in much to reduce all the kick up. Despite the muck we came away with clear shots of these amazing creatures. The dive masters did a nice job with finding these critters.
The food was excellent! The ginger rice was a nice staple every morning and evening along with multiple dishes of a meat, fish, and vegtable for every lunch and dinner. Wonderful lunches were served on the boat inbetween the 2nd and 3rd dives of the day. Crackers, Tea, and Pineapple were available inbetween intervals as well. The boat was well sheltered and had a full stand up head on board with towels, seat cushions and electricity to charge your strobes in between dives if necessary. The dive crew took great care of us. Drinks were either sprite, coke, tea, or filtered water put in recycled water bottles. It was a treat to get an actual previously unopened water bottle.
Dinners were wonderful as well, eating communal style with the other fellow divers there. Free wifi was available only at the restaurant/ living room area with everyone plugging in at night their with laptops.
Our bugalow was comfortable sleeping at night without AC due to cooler temps at night and the ceiling fan. It had a beautiful view and plenty of outlets for charging. The only downside to our bungalow Kura Kura, was that it had no flush toilet. A bucket was provided to pour water into the regular toilet in order to flush down the waste. We speculated that it was due to our lower elevation. Despite this rustic type facility it was surprising it didn't smell. Our friends in Musang bungalow had a flush toilet.
Bungalow tap water wasn't filtered so filtered water from a water pitcher was necessary to brush your teeth with. Fresh water was provided in the bungalow each day for this purpose.
The kids had a great time and were well cared for by the same English speaking care taker, Melky all of the 9 days there. They spent their days catching juveniles of all the fish we were seeing in the muck and reefs all day....seahorse, frog fish, file fish, anemone fish, bat fish, etc. Pretty amazing! They hated to leave by the end of the trip and will be missing their Indonesia friends for a long time to come.
Belgis, the GM there while Rob and Linda (owners) were away, did a nice job seeing to what ever needs we had. It was a great trip!
