White Tiger Forest Lodge is located closest to the Tala zone (which is the premium zone in Bandhavgarh). In fact you can see the hotel while returning from the tiger safari. The hotel is run by MP Tourism. The rooms in the hotel are clean and spacious. There were a few big ants running around in the room, but you are in the middle of the jungle, so that is par for the course. There were also some monkeys (langurs) runnings around the hotel property in the morning.
I went in Dec 2011 and so ended up paying the peak tariff of Rs 4,200 per night (which seemed a bit expensive). The tariff however includes tax and all meals (the menu is set but the food was decent).
The main drawback of this hotel is that the lighting in the night is pretty poor and in some places I could hardly see where I was walking (My room was a good 100m from the reception area and eating area). The hotel could have lit a small bonfire in the sitting area which would have allowed guests to enjoy the night sky (but none of this happened). Some of the nearby private hotels have some folk dances and other entertainment in the evening which is not available in White Tiger Forest Lodge (personally I prefer to have it quiet in a jungle :)).
The hotel guys however provide you with some hot tea and biscuits at 5.30am before you set off on your safari (which was very nice of them).
The cost for the jeep + guide is Rs 2,000 if booked from the hotel. I did not explore outside but heard the rates are about Rs 500 less if you hire a jeep from outside. The chances of seeing a tiger in Bandhavgarh must be around 10% (the tiger is an elusive animal). Apparently mornings are better than afternoons for spotting tigers in winter. But summer is the best season for spotting tigers. I managed to see a tiger at pretty close quarters which made the experience worthwhile. But the jeep following us (some 1 min behind) missed the tiger. So it is a matter of chance. You have the option of using a elephant in the second half of the tiger safari (which increases your chances of spotting a tiger but it costs Rs 200 per person additional).
The landscape in the forest is pretty good with trees, grasslands, water bodies and some mountains nearby. You will surely see some spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boars, monkeys, peacocks and a number of birds in the forest.
Booking taxis from the hotel is expensive. MP Tourism charges about Rs 10/km for non-ac indica which is a lot. You can go to the market area nearby and book an Innova for much lower rates. You can get an Innova to Khajurao for about Rs 3000-3500 whereas the hotel charges about Rs 5000 for an Indica.
Overall, if you prefer the safety of a govt. run hotel then it is a pretty decent bet is you are going with your family.
