We planned the trip to Mt. Abu in a hurry during the Diwali break..And that's the worst time to go that place..I bet even otherwise, Mt. Abu is quite pathetic..The gujjus (including me) treat the place like a spitton and the local administration has no clue on handling traffic, power, water, pollution, sewage and the touts..
But...One bright spot for us was The Connaught House at Mt. Abu..They are owned by the royal family of Jodhpur and their staff really know how to treat ordinary folks (like us) like royalty.
Cannot complain about room size..Damn large..And they organise folk dance and all kinds of other programs in the evenings on their property to keep you away from the maddening crowds of Mt. Abu.
We did not eat out at all..Just had food at the hotel..Pretty decent and they are willing to make something that you request (for no extra charge)..Some dishes they prepare very well (north Indian ones), some pretty badly (the s. Indian ones)..And they are somewhere in the middle as regards continental fare is concerned..
The property is on a slope above the central market so, you are actually close to the crappy shopping and central areas of Mt. Abu..But honestly, its secluded enough for you to feel pretty happyly away from the rubbish that Mt. Abu now is..
The only hassle, if at all was that there were lots of insects around (not mosquitoes) inspite of the net cover around all the windows..Manageable if you are not the dainty darling types..
If you have to go to Mt. Abu, go to this place..Else, choose another mountain.
BTW, the Dilwara temples are clearly not so good as they used to look when I was a kid..Rajasthan Govt needs to learn from their Maharajas on upkeep of forts, palaces, temples and monuments..That's hoping for too much, I guess. Politicians and Bureaucrats will never appreciate these things..They did not have toil for them..
