“Lucky to be alive”

Don't give this place any business. We booked after checking out the motel online, thinking it would be great to catch the early ferry just down the road.

Online, the rooms look good, nothing too fancy but quality. No Pictures of the outside. We were told that there were only two rooms available, a king or queen size room. We booked both as we were traveling with friends.

Once arriving at the motel, our jaws dropped. A 2 storey light blue motel with faded paint. We asked the owner to see one of the rooms before agreeing to stay the night. We were given the key to room 1. Room 1 it turned out was recently renovated, new paint, couch and table. A small 13 inch flat screen tv, but was acceptable as the room appeared clean, and it was only a one night stay.

We decided that the motel was satisfactory and went and confirmed
The reservation. We were given room 1 and 3. Upon entering room 3, we were devastated. The room
Was dark and smelled of urine. There were no lights, merely lamps. A small tube tv sat directly beside the bed blocking the window. A small stand-alone closet stood at the foot of the bed and smelled badly. The bathroom smelled worse, had rotten floorboards and a 1950 sink. The bathtub was black and most wall tiles were also. There was no lock on the door, 2 phone books and no phone!!

Walls were paper thin, and did not close properly, wind was blowing through the openness.

The large king size room 1 had a large bathtub, but no curtain for showering and tiles were chipped or missing.

Room 1 cost 99 dollars a night, where room 3 cost 89.

We would have left, but rooms were not refundable.

Sleep was not easily obtained that night, morning could not come soon enough.

At checkout there was nobody at reception, so keys were left in the room.

I would rather sleep in the car as previously suggested.

“Stop - do not stay here!”

This is a run down, unsafe, dirty motel in an ideal spot for a nice one. The owner's Mercedes is in stark contrast to this place. Housekeeping is sporadic, the "kitchenette" was a two burner stove that didn't work, an electric kettle with no cord, a microwave and a tiny fridge. The smoke detector in my room began to beep and the front desk handed me a battery. If a new toilet equals renovated then I guess I'll just forget the dirty everything else.

“Much better options out there - keep looking”

I wanted a hotel near to the ferry terminal and this looked like just the place - it wasn't. The room decor was dated, and the bathroom chipped. The noise from the next room was clearly audible and even the hum of the fridge was loud enough to keep me awake. Overall it just didn't meet expectations given the cost of the room, which was comparable to other - much better - places I stayed in while visiting British Columbia.

“Beware unposted cancellation fees”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

If you reserve a room at the Beach Grove Motel – beware – you might get charged an unposted cancellation fee.

I booked a room directly with the motel over the phone for 3 friends in early September 2010 and left my credit card number for the reservation. I wanted to pay for the balance with my credit card but was told that wasn’t possible and my friends staying in the room would need to use their credit card for that. After my friends checked out some online reviews of the Beach Grove Motel, they decided they absolutely did not want to stay there. When I phoned the motel a day after making the reservation (and the day before the reserved date) to cancel, I was told there was a 24 hour cancellation policy and would be charged the full $89.00. Since there’s no mention on the Beach Grove Motel website of cancellation fees and I wasn’t told anything about a cancellation fee when I booked the room, I told the manager I didn’t want to pay any fees. His response was that 24 hour cancellation fees are common in the motel industry. When I pressed further on this, I was told he would reduce the cancellation fee to $50.00 if he was unable to find someone else to book that particular motel room for that night.

My friends also tried phoning the motel to cancel this reservation and even asked if the manager had turned down any bookings in the 24 hour period I had booked the room and then cancelled. They were told that no one had been denied that room at the motel because of my reservation.

In the end I was charged $45.00 for a motel room not used by my friends or me (seems like a cash grab to me). Not cool. Don’t book at the Beach Grove Motel. Stay at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn instead.
