“Surpassed all our expectations-Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

As new parents of a five month old we decided to break our journey from the South of France back to Calais with an overnight stay in a hotel. We were restricted by our search somewhat as we were using a blackberry and could only partially read/see the information! We ended up choosing the Hostelerie Le Clos and we really feel we lucked out!
We arrived slightly frazzled and our first impression was wonderful. Eric and one of his team were straight out to our car to greet us and help us with our bags. On seeing the baby Eric immediately changed our room as our request for a travel cot had not made it to them (the limitations of the blackberry evident!). He said that this was no problem and arrived within 5 mins in our room and set the cot up. Our room was gorgeous and so quaint. Eric insisted we join them for dinner which turned out to be included in our room rate (news to us-blackberry again!!)
Eric told us there was no problem bringing our baby to dinner who remained sleeping for the first two courses of our fine dining experience. Eric and his team told us there was no problem having the baby awake in the dining room but we felt it unfair to the other diners so took turns to eat our remaining courses –all wonderfully tasty- while the other walked the baby around the reception area. We eventually admitted defeat by desert and asked that it be taken in our room –which again was no problem.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have vowed to return soon!

We said we had often paid more and been disappointed..the service at this hotel surpasses all our expectations!

“Absolutely amazing, we felt like royalty”

This place is fantastic. We planned it as a place to break a journey, and it was perfect. Due to problems with the ferry we arrived very late, but they kept our table, took our bags and gave us an extremely warm welcome, even though I looked like a tramp. The food at the restaurant is phenomenal : we had a salad with a savoury sorbet that is the most delicious thing I can ever remember eating. The room was stylish without being chintzy, and they served us a great breakfast in it. It felt expensive, especially with the weak pound, but it was definitely worth it. If you feel like pushing the boat out, you will not be disappointed.

“Nice, but rather tense!”

Looking at the other reviews I agree it is a very nice hotel. We had a spacious suite good bathroom seperate shower all very clean. The owner insisted we had to have dinner included in the price. It was a very good meal despite being told off when I had the nerve to pour my own wine! ' we do not do that kind of thing here' I was told in no uncertain terms. They try a bit too hard and make your stay rather tense. Their office is under the stairs, as if they are monitoring your every move. Good intentions, no complaints as such , kind of fun in a spooky Hitchcock meets Fawlty Towers kind of way. Great place to stay for one or two nights ,but beware............it is not cheap!

“a hidden gem, a must for experiencing a great Relais et Chateaux”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2009

My wife and I wish to thank our hosts Eric and Odile Brial again for making our stay in the Hostellerie le Clos in Verneuil quite so memorable: for our exquisitely appointed junior suite, a wonderful dinner (and chapeau for the best trou normand ever and from our hosts’ own garden no less), the park a haven of quiet and well maintained, the loving care bestowed on the fading sequoia, and many other subtle touches that one can legitimately expect from a top flight Relais et Chateaux, which this one certainly is. On arrival Monsieur Brial invited us to treat his lovely domaine as our home – we were booked for two nights – and he meant it. He and his wife were charming and helpful, multi-lingually so when our French faltered. The night of the fermeture of the restaurant they booked us into La Madeleine, the most gastronomic little restaurant in Verneuil after the Hostellerie. Here too we were treated to a delicious dinner, attentively served by madame (excellent value menus) after which the owner chef, who trained in Gavroche, ran us home because a freak thunderstorm would have drenched us. We fell in love with Normandy there and then and hope to be back soon. Merci encore, Eric et Odile, pour votre accueil exceptionnel, de la part de Rene et Jean. A la prochaine.

“A Memorable Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2008

We turned up fairly late on a wet Sunday evening when the rest of Normandie was closed. A warm friendly welcome, an upgraded room and confirmation we could eat in the restaurant, nothing was too much trouble. It transpired we were the only people staying, the restaurant should have been closed and the people we had passed on the drive were the staff going off duty.
The chef came back in and we genuinely believe he took pleasure in cooking our meal, which was excellent (the white chocolate and Roquefort alone was worth the trip). Having in the past suffered at the hands of hoteliers looking forward to a couple of days off it was wonderful to be treated like an honoured guest.
