“holiday from hell”

Well i booked this experience with Sunsave Travel on behalf of Med Hotels (owned by Thomas Cook) thinking with a major tour operator things would be ok how wrong could i be.....From start to finish it was a nightmare.I waited until my complaints were reviewed before writing my views on Trip Advisor but as i have now handed my complaint to my solicitor i thought i should warn any future holidaymakers yo give this complex a wide berth.Honestly i would never go back even if it was free. The majority of English guests we met through our 2wks stay all suffered with sickness diarrhea and as there are no places to visit outside the complex it had to be the food served.....it was disgusting even the cats would turn there tails and run and the staff would only eat here under duress.Half the advertised ammenities were closed and the onsite shop does not sell food only souveniers. Our hell started Oct 4th for 2wks but mine continued for a further 2wks as due to the Gastroentitis i was unable to return to work.
As an ex rep myself i thought reading all the negative reviews can't be right but how wrong i was.
If my review saves 1 family from a bad experience then i have done what i set out to do.Pay that bit extra and go to a central resort as if the food is that bad at least you can choose to eat elsewhere,my family did not have a choice so we had to eat here and suffered food poisoning even though Med Hotels seem to think this was due to dietry changes...errr read the other reviews we really do feel this complex is bad.

“DONT BOTHER, PLEASE!”

We have often holiday'd even though the reviews have been varied as we are of the opinion that when in another country you try their food, culture etc. Dont bother going to this hotel please. We are not fussy but all 8 of us were poorly in varying degrees whilst there. I myself ended up paying £50 for tablets from the doctor as I couldnt leave the room with stomach cramps and dihorrea for 2 days. My husband and sister were also very bad, the rest of the party were not quite as ill but still suffered. The rooms were kept very nice by the cleaners who tried hard but we had orange/brown water most days in the shower, sink and toilet. It might have made us ill or the food which was always luke warm. My husband and myself lived on fresh made pizza's for the second week as we could see them being made. We did not go off complex as the area we were in was like downtown Beirut and some of the stories we heard from other holiday makers made us quite wary. The staff were about 1/3 pleasant 2/3 surly. The animation team were brill and tried to keep everybody entertained, but even they didn't like the hotel much. I would not go back there and would say that maybe because it was the end of the season they didnt make the effort but it was a waste of our money.

“Read On....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

...Firstly I booked Sun Beach Club Playa Hotel, Bir El Bey IS closed, however it is joint with Carribbean World which is listed as in Borj Cedria which is where we ended up staying.  I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights 12-15 October 2011 with my Fiance.  I booked this hotel about 6 weeks before stay.  I was looking for an 'AI' hotel reasonabiliy close to Tunis and this seemed to be the only suitable one.  I had read a few reviews before I went which were concerning.  One of which was some else saying that this hotel is in fact closed, after reading this I contacted the company I made the booking with to check this out and they told me the hotel is fully operational and there is just a few rooms which are closed.
This review is really for Club Carribean World the only part of Sun Beach which is open is there swimming pool which is easily accessed and usable from Caribbean World.

-Room
The rooms are chalet / bungalow style (although looking at pictures of Sun Beach it is all in hotels rooms, which I would have preferred hence why I didn't initially book Caribbean World for the fact they have bungalows not rooms in hotel).
The bungalow was fine, it was spacious and clean, double bed, dressing table, TV and nice bathroom.

-Food
The worst!  I am certainly no picky eater.  I would not say the food was 'inedable' but it was not very nice at all.  For instance the milk for cereal at breakfast was sour and warm, they served baked beans, olives and cauliflower as a hot choice for breakfast and made to order omlettes which were cooked in a black burnt frying pan and consisted of nothing.  Lunch and dinner like most AI hotels was pretty much the same, salad - yet this was never replenished, I think it was the most popular dish in this hotel as everything else just looked horrible.  I did try other food, grilled veg - I don't know how they got that wrong but it tasted burnt yet wasn't, the majority of the other dishes were Tunisian speciality which I like to try (only tried once) my fiance is Tunisian and he did not like any of the dishes here.  The pizzas were made to order and they were ok.  The restaurant is plan and simple and you can sit where you like inside or outside (you don't have the same waiter).

-Drinks
Beer, red, white & rose wine, and bouka are the only alcoholic drinks available on AI.  They do sell bottles of Golden Brau and Heiniken I think 2,500 TND  (£1.25) per bottle.  The AI beer is ok.  The white wine was like drinking vinigar (I know you don't get the best of the best in AI but this was below the cheapest wine about (if thats what it was!)
What I disliked is the plastic beakers that you are given for drinking outside.  In other AI hotels I have stayed they have used disposible cups which I think is much more hygenic than reusable plastic beakers with dirty and scratch rims.

-Swimming Pools and Gardens
The swimming pool appeared to be clean and the surrounding areas were tidy.  The entertainment around the main pool was average.  The swimming pool for the Sun Beach Hotel was accessable and usable we just came across it whilst walking the grounds and I recognised it from the pictures when I booked Sun Beach, there were no other guests around it at all.
There are waterslides in the Caribbean World, however...... you have to pay 5 TND pp per day!  Which I don't think it makes sense considering the fact it is a splash resort!  Needless to say there were about 2 or 3 people using them.

-Beach
The beach wasn't looked after at all it was full of seaweed and had not been cleared like most private hotel beaches. It was a little bit slopey but just slightly. It is quite a walk from the hotel approx 400 yards, this did not bother us, but again something to be aware of.

-Entertainment
The entertainment is average, the majority of the hotels in Tunisia use the same entertainment programme so what you are seeing whether how good or bad it is is not necessarily down to the hotel but down to how much effort the animation team make of it.  These were quite a good and friendly bunch.
There are a few games machines in the hotel and there is a room with 6 pool tables, however each one of them were missing at least one ball.

-Outside the Hotel
I ready a review before I went to this hotel describing the surrounding area as being like 'Bosnia' and some people saying that some taxi's won't even come to the area Borj Cedria / Bir El Bey.  This is not the case I can only assume the guest who made this review had never been to Tunisia (unless they had stayed in Hammamet or PEK which is purpose built).  This is Tunisia there are a lot of barren areas and lots of litter which is what this is like outside it is not unusual.  Re the taxi's the reason that a lot of taxi's don't go into the area is because this hotel is the only hotel here, and if it is off peak then there is obviously not much need for taxi's therefore the drivers are not always going to drop someone off at a hotel is there is not much chance of them picking someone up and making money on their return journey unless they charge you a exceptional amount.
There is nothing outside the hotel in means of shops or anything at all really, I was already aware of the location as we just used this as it was a 40 mins train ride from Tunis Centre. The train station would be a good 25 min walk away, we did use a taxi as my Fiance new how to get hold of one whicih parks up outside train station.
I think there were only another 2 families that were English staying in the hotel. It was mainly Polish, Russian, German and French. One more thing, they do not have a night club in the hotel so in the main show bar they play music for the adults from 2300-0200 which is rather noisey if you are staying in a room near the main hotel which we were.
All in all the hotel was not aweful although the food was.  I personally wouldn't stay here again, but if you have already booked this hotel then enjoy it but just beware about the food (it is cooked properly just tastes aweful).

“Stay Away (unless its fat camp you need.)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Where to begin. My husband and I have enjoyed many lovely holidays together but we have never experienced anything so awful as this. We were met at the airport by a rep and told to board the luxury coach which was lovely with air con and comfortable. However when we reached Hammamet we we told to transfer onto a minibus as we still had a journey to the resort. That journey took a futher hour and a half which was so scary. We travelled through such awful regions that looked like a war zone and this never improved even as we reached our destination. The first sight to see was a uniformed man with a machine gun across his chest . We realised we were alongside an army base how reasurring is that. I also noticed signs which suggested high risk of explosions. I was concerned from here on in and things never improved. Upon entering the reception we realised we were not expected, the staff did not appear to know of our arrival and asked us our nationality, When my husband said english the reply he got was "you can tell" what a warm welcome that is. A very miserable man incapable of smiling arrived and began to walk off with our bags so we followed. Boy oh boy! what a beautiful room this is. I couldnt believe my eyes...such a dark room despite being painted canary yellow, this was due to most lights not working, we had to use bathroom lights most of the time to see at night. The view from the room was an empty derilict building and a high crane.(how lovely) No matter were we went just ouside the room front or back all we could smell was sewerage. In areas this place stinks. Our bathroom was disgusting. There was a black footprint in the bath, the toilet seat was loose and cracked and the interior was so stained and full of brown water. We tried the wash basin and could only get high pressured cold water, the hot was only a trickle. The shower was also broke. We reported at reception about our concerns and fair enough a plumber arrived to take a look. The shower was fixed and so was the hot water to the wash basin but at the cost of not having the automatic plug. To lift the plug we had a place a baby wipe around it to lift the plug out. The water you guessed it was brown and the baby wipe was a disgusting colour every time it was removed. I felt sick everytime I had to go onto the bathroom. The shower curtain was so stained and marked it was a joke. We realised after a very short time there that we as English folk were very much in the minority. After a few days we overheard an english conversation and inntroduced ourselves to another family. Thank goodness for the other English people we eventually met because we were going out of our minds by the feeling of isolation and the lack of awareness from the resort (if you can call it that that) that there are any problems. I have been all inclusive before and for that would expect some level of choice and polite service. Well dont expect it from here. No one was polite , to ask for a white coffee was frowned upon and on two occassions we were told the coffee machine was broken. It wasnt broken when the rep asked for a coffee..Oh and she got her coffee in a glass...whats one of those because the norm there is to give you a coffee in a chipped cup and a cold drink in a chewed plastic beaker like a child. The food was awful for any english folk. Not a chip or chicken nugget for children...hope they like fish heads and pasta because thats the menu morning noon and night. Pastries are stale and salad is full of flies. I asked for omelette and when I cut it open it was uncooked. When I asked for it to be cooked further I was refused. One morning at breakfast we were joined by a mouse did anyone care not at all. What is all the fuss English lady!! The pool area was clean by appearance but when joined by dogs at the pool side eating from the bins and cats everywhere it isnt pleasant. To find a quiet area we went to the waterslide area. Here you pay 5 dinar pp. Yes it was quiet the other holiday makers such as Russians and Polish did not go here..probably beacause you have to pay. As quiet as it was the area has broken tiles along the pool and used sunbeds and wire was dumped under the slide area, very unpleasant to look at. You had to search for a clean sun lounger many are filthy. The pool attendant would collect any rubbish from the area and happily in view of people throw it over the hedge into the next piece of waste land. We were unhappy at many levels about so many things and beieve me it takes a lot to make be loose it, but this place was hell. Very poor service, no basic standards of cleanliness,(the cleaner did try), the bedding was regularly changed but this consisted of a sheet and brown horse blanket each.. We never saw a rep, usually someone meets you and you have a meet and greet..not here you dont. When we asked to see the Rep to complain and ask could we be moved to another resort or hotel the reply was it's not my problem .We had to try to relocate oursleves which we tried but could not get any help despite several calls to UK ,and the only flight out back to the UK would be via Moscow at a rediculous cost.We were stuck there. Had it not been for the fabulous English people we met I think I would have gone mad. It takes a lot to make me cry, but I managed lots of that. I have lots of photo evidence, and must stress that this place caters for anyone not english. We were told by staff that we were in the worst Caribbean World, and told the same by the visiting market traders, that this area is very bad. Please beieve me when I say it is awful. Would you want to eat a meal when you see a chef wearing a bandage that is so stained with what you believe to be blood and infection, but who is happy to have a beer and fag at the bar in uniform. If you dont want a jail sentence or upset stamach stay away. However if you want a crash diet its for you. We lost over half a stone each. What we ate was bought in the shop. I'm so happy to be at home despite being on antibiotics for an infected foot.(loose pool tile Cheers!) Two weeks there was a living hell.Thank you to the english couples we met..you know who you are, you kept us sane. x

“dont pay to go to alcatraz!!!”

Where do i begin!?
my boyfriend and i landed at the airport and the porter who took out bags barely 50 yards demanding money, the "tansfer" was a run down old bus with broken windows and looked like it needed a good clean, the location coming into the resort looked like a war zone (ironic as the hotel was next to a military base, how thrilling) and there was nothing, i mean nothing around the area at all (except for a few dead dogs knocking about....).On our arrial we were greeted by the rudest staff i have ever met. The room was ok, full of mozzys and i got bit to within an inch of me. Bathroom was disgusting, running brown water that smells like a sewer.the maid however did clean it everyday. the animation team were the only good things going as they did try so very hard to please everyone and even THEY agreed what a joke the hotel was! that says it all!!!
out of so many hundred families, there were only a few enlish. it was full of russians, french and polish which usually i dont mind but it was isloating.us english sought each other out and spent the remainder of out "prison sentence" as a group. The food makes me gip thinking about it.eel, fish heads and all sorts of crap that they didnt label but it looked like and sunk like hell! there was no recogisable food at all and it was left in the open for flies to go and lay their eggs.bloody vile!!! the drinks were rubbish and tasted like watered down vinegar (served in chewed plastic cups), the waiter service was horrendous, they would come to your table at mealtimes and scrape your leftovers in a mouldy tuppaware tub in front of you (not a big deal but offputting). the pool was ok but to get away from the hustle you had to pay 5 dinars to fo to the water park (couple of slides, whoop de doo!) which was as dirty as the rest of the place. The description of the hotel is rubbish, there is no choice of restaurants, there is no nice views, it isnt clean, nobody is polite and there isnt one thing that was satisfactory at all! even the excursions were pathetic (which you get hassled to buy). the whole thing was like a big joke, your know its bad when you get constant stomach cramps which stop you going to work when you get home.its like alcatraz but with worse food.if you have booked this place and cant get moved at all (which i recommend you try) take a loooot of money with you so you can go out to eat which is about 20 mins away to thr nearest restaurant (le maazim) and hire a car so you can get out and about.im not one to fuss and im far from high maintenennce but it really was that bad.
