The main story line is that I don't feel as though I got a good value for the money we paid to stay at this hotel. But also, having said that, a lower price point probably would have changed that perception (i.e., it's certainly not a dump that's entirely without hope).
My mom and my sisters were visiting me in Colombia for the week, and we decided to take a small one night trip to Villa De Leyva. We stayed at the Getsemani after a friend had looked up a few hotels for us. Based on the pics on the internet, the hotel looked quaint and rustic, with modern rooms and amenities. Our room charge - $160 for a room with three beds - was a more than I thought we needed to be charged for a middle of the week stay during a non-touristy season for the city. But given what I saw as the quality of the rooms, I was expecting a good value out of the stay.
Cutting to the chase, my main points where I thought I didn't receive good value were:
1) Room was very small - smaller than my own bedroom in my apartment - and the beds were VERY stiff and uncomfortable. I expect more space for what we paid.
2) When we came back during the night from the main plaza, the front gate was locked and no one was at the front desk to let us in (they must have been helping someone else). You should ALWAYS have someone at the front desk, especially if they're needed to let people in and out of the hotel. If there was a situation where someone was in danger and needed to enter, this could create a very serious problem. After 5 minutes of waiting eventually a help hand heard our ringing and let us in.
3) The included breakfast is quite limited, and they charge for extra for insignificant things. Three of us asked for cheese in our scrambled eggs, and they charged us for that cheese. To drink, they gave us a choice of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea and we each had a coffee and hot chocolate - they charged us for each having an extra drink. The charges weren't big by any means, but I don't see why you would charge for such small items on an included breakfast. To me it made the hotel seem even more of a cheapskate. When I questioned him, the waiter told me he explained these charges to me before I ordered, and my Spanish isn't perfect so maybe he did, but I certainly don't remember him doing so.
(...and 4) This wasn't the hotel's fault at all, but certainly added to the experience - someone was lighting fireworks off right next to the hotel in the morning from 4AM to 8AM.....I have NO clue why they would, but it woke all of us up).
Here are what I thought were the good points:
1) Very clean
2) Attentive, friendly staff (when they're there :-))
3) Good water pressure in the showers (big point for my sisters)
4) Very pretty on the inside - rustic looking villa style. The courtyard is relaxing and easy to read a book in.
If we had paid $90, I would have considered it a good value. But it's not at $160. It has it's good points, they just don't overcome it's price.
