“Excellent hotel with great food”

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in early October 2010. This is the newer, and less posh, of the two Paradores in the town, but is still an elegant place. Our large room included a welcome sitting area. The restaurant was remarkable and a good value for the high-quality food. Make sure you get the breakfast buffet. This was not a particularly inexpensive hotel, but we enjoyed our stay.

“Historical old hotel with impecable service”

This is a Parador, so you know the standard of service that you are going to get. Very attentive and supportive staff in reception, the bar and restaurant.

While the hotel was great the location let it down. There isn't much to do in Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

If you want to visit the wineries of the Rioja Alta then it is best to stay in Haro.

“Great parador, a special experience!”

A group of friends and I spent one night in this parador which is a former monastery. The athmosphere is really special and mysterious, you feel like thrown back for centuries. The rooms are big, they have an antique touch and the same time all modern comforts. The entrance, lobby, bar, restaurant.....all areas are just amazing. The staff is also very nice and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were very good, high quality food. Allover a great experience and if I ever go back to this area, I will stay in this parador.

“Old World Elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

This is one of two Parador's in a small town; the other one (Santo Domingo de la Calzada) is better known and has 4 stars rather than the 3 stars given to this Parador. The only reason I can think of that would make sense for this Parador to have only 3 stars is that it doesn't have air conditioning. Other than that, I think it exceeds the other Parador in every way from the lovely courtyard, large elegant public spaces on the main level and well appointed guest rooms. There was a lovely breeze every evening (which the staff said is the norm) and we were a very comfortable temperature in the room.
In addition to the large dining room, they have a cozy elegant bar where, in addition to a full bar, you can get a small meal if you didn't want to eat a more formal meal in the main dining room.

“A peaceful hotel with very helpful staff”

We have just returned from a three night break at this parador which we booked through Brittany Ferries. We had a standard room (214) which was of a good size and the two single beds together measured eight feet wide - very comfortable. This is a beautifully furnished hotel with the monastic tranquility seemingly inherited from the previous inhabitants, perhaps too quiet for some but preferable to the crowds referred to in the reviews of the parador in Plaza del Santo.
Very grateful to earlier reviewer for recommending Casa Amparo where we ate every night. All we could eat and drink for less than the set menu for one at the parador. I do recommend this restaurant to those looking for good wholesome food and as much vino de la casa as you could possibly want - and those who know me will verify that I have a particular fondness for the vino tinto. You will find Casa Amparo several hundred yards down Ave Juan Carlos on the opposite side of the road just after the shop sign 'Tomas.'
