We stayed at Haus Sterr-Peter-Martin over Xmas 2011 and had a lovely relaxing time. Snow came early so when we arrived from Munich on the train it looked amazing and Martin met us at the train to drive us back with our bags, which was great in all the snow. The information packages Margaret and Martin have prepared are very well thought out and professional looking. They provide endless information on what you can do in Bayerisch Eisenstein the surrounds as well as beyond into Czech Republic, including day trips, walking trips, cooking lessons, glass blowing or painting lessons, the list goes on.
We stayed in House Martin in room Otter (a one bed apartment) which was very modern and spotlessly clean with a well equipped kitchen. The beds are amazingly comfortable and the bathroom had a shower with plenty of hot water and is all centrally heated of course. It was stocked with the first days breakfast with cereal, milk, butter, fruit juice, coffee beans (with grinder and filter machine) which was great not having to rush out to buy your groceries immediately after arriving. As well as the arrival supplies Margaret and Martin run an open all hours, honesty system shop where you can buy ready cooked homemade frozen meals, pasta and sauces, pizzas, ice creams, eggs, soft drinks and beer and wine, many local and a lot of the products are organic and at extremely reasonable prices. A high priority of the proprietors is recycling and they provide the means to do this with colour coded bins etc in your kitchen and in the basement of your house and also large bins outside, so recycling couldn’t be easier!!
Included in the room rate is the tourist tax that goes towards a ‘Guti Card’ or local train and bus pass that is all pre arranged for your arrival. This gives you free access to the Bayern district which includes many miles around B.E. and there is a lot to see and do, as long as you have the time unlike the four days that we had, we wish we had longer as it really is a beautiful area and Haus Sterr-Peter-Martin is a great base to see it from.
A lovely touch in the house on our arrival was a decorated Christmas tree with lights and some decorations, and a gift bag on Christmas eve with some wine, biscuits, crackers and festive serviettes.
I note in another review a comment on the nearby train, but we were right near the tracks and you barely notice it and it doesn’t run all night anyway so I don’t see this as an issue.
