Compared to other places in its category, its about the same. All things taken into consideration, I think a real rating for this place is between 2 and 3.
Room was on 1st floor in 'superior building', whatever lies in the term superior remains unknown. It had the basics with big not particularly comfy bed, couple chairs, small fridge, small tv and desk. And a balcony with chairs and table. Very cheap and average at best and on a good day. Worn finish/materials to go with that. The lighting is the room is very very poor when you need it after sunset and if you want to lie in bed and read a book, its too dimmed and there just isnt enough light in the room. Very poor and thinking about it, I believe its one of the worst lit rooms I have ever tried.
Bathroom also very basic and the showercorner is with a showercurtain.
Pool area is small but as I have said before....When you go to a place like Samui, its not for pool but for beach and ocean.
Breakfast was expected to be pretty bad after my initial judgement of the premisses and I was right. I found it to be very poor. So poor that I only ate once during my entire stay. usual white bread with a toaster that needed 2 runs for the bread to crust sufficiently, omelette stand which is mediocre but there were at least thai dishes and they get a little plus for that since I am against the western idea of white bread and pastries for breakfast. You are what you eat so why not eat good and nutritious so you get ENERGY to enjoy your expensive stay in what most people consider a pretty exotic place. Anyways...coffee is absolutely horrible which seem to be the standard in Samui. Wonder where they get it from, its really bad.
Getting back to the room, I dont like when the doors open with a key and not a card which should be the standard today. Btw they will charge you 1000 baht if you lose it ! And the balcony door has what I would call a toiletdoor lock. Which in turn rates the safety of the valuables in the room to be very very poor. Too easy to get in. And no cams for safety in 'the hallways' either.
In general it seems that many hotels in islands like Samui are built to last as long as they last, which means with no intention of improving or updating the looks and functions. They wont spend that little xtra and all that matters is what they can rake in over the period of the hotels lifespan. I see for sure the same will happen to this place.
And I really disapprove of the policy I have seen in several hotels. A policy that says if you take home 'company', they will either not allow it OR charge the guest 500-1000 baht/night. And this is even if you have paid for 2 people in the room during your entire stay. In my book, 2 people means 2 people and it is then up to ME who that 2 people are, period !! The 'company' being a girl, a friend or whatever, its just unacceptable to be charged xtra for something you already paid for. Then they will talk about your own safety bla bla, but with their locks and complete lack of security/surveillance, its all the same. Its all just a way of taking more money out of the western pockets.
Hotel is situated only 2 long stone-throws from The Ark bar hotel which must be a nightmare to stay in since the VERY LOUD music is pumping from there nonstop and its very easily heard at Baan Chaweng, even til pretty late in the night. Party atmos is good but not when its nonstop and when I want to sleep, I like it quiet. I have read reviews on other hotels where the Ark bar noise is also addressed and I wonder how and why the other hotels allow it to continue. Expect noise from that direction when you stay here. When you go to Chaweng at night, look left and right, the place with a 1000 colored lights is The Ark bar Hotel.
Staff nice enough and their nice SUV taxi to the airport was a 300 baht charge which is as low as it gets in Samui.
Location is 5 star, in the middle of where all the action is, bars etc.
All in all this was a disappointing experience, with the room and the price for it being the major contributor to the 2-star rating. 3.750 baht/night is way too much for a place like this, even in high season.
