“Lovely comfortable place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

We booked this hotel through Brittany Ferries and only stayed here one night in early October but wished we could have stayed longer. The chef patron (who speaks very good English) and his family were very friendly and welcoming and we thouroughly enjoyed our meal in the restaurant sat next to the log fire. The rooms were very clean and well appointed and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel is just set back far enough from the main road and therefore there was no traffic noise. Overall, very good value for money. We hope to return again and would recommend to other people.

“You may not get what you booked, check the bill on departure”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

After reading the reviews I think we must have stayed at a different hotel with the same name!
First the good points. The bed was very comfortable and the buffet breakfast was plentiful and good.
But the rest! On arrival, was told by the owner that although we had booked half board for 2 nights, he had to close the restaurant on the 2nd night. He said he was not able to contact us because he did not have a contact number. But we had booked through the logis site and they had our email address, so no excuse not getting the Logis site to inform us. He offerred to make a booking at a restaurant for us, but no offer of compensation was made for the inconvenience. Although not given a reason for the closure, it looked like it was because the owners were entertaining their own friends or relatives.
However based on the meal the first night, he actually did us a favour by closing. The restaurant or more accurately the residents dining room was totally lacking any ambiance or atmosphere. The set no choice 3 course meal was overpriced, fancy and bland. The colour of the main course was mainly beige, an unnamed fish, probably cod, a bland sauce, and sauerkraut. We chose a white wine because 2 courses were fish. The wine was served chilled, but plonked on the table with no cooler or ice bucket to keep it cooled. This is France, surely they should know how to serve wine!
Fortunately the 2nd night we found a very good restaurant in the village at the Hotel des Voyageurs. It was full on a Sunday night (unusual for France), no other customers from the Sous Bois, had a good 3 course menu with choice for 17euro, food was very good, brilliant atmosphere, cooler provided for the rose wine we ordered.
Pictures of the hotel on the website show it in a large pine tree garden. What it does not show it that it is wedged between an Intermarche supermarket on 1 side, and an industrial site on the other.
The room had a list of don'ts, such as "It is forbidden to consume food or beverages not purchased in the hotel". We were expecting Basil Fawlty to burst into the room anytime to check if any illicit food was being consumed!
Finally on departure on checking the bill, found that on the first night we were charged for half board and also breakfast. On pointing out the error that half board includes breakfast, the owner blamed his wife because she had made up the bill.
Altogether a thoroughly underwhelming experience.

“A really good place.”

We stayed here two nights, to visit Carnac and to do some walking along the beautiful estuaries and coasts nearby. Our room was the last one available, but it was fine, and the bed was very comfortable. There's a restaurant for guests only, and we had two excellent dinners there. The husband and wife owners do the cooking to a good professional standard, and they take a real interest in your reaction to their food. Both were charming and helpful. This is a very comfortable and fairly-priced hotel, in an excellent location, a short drive from many interesting places. Think twice before driving onto the Quiberon peninsula, though, because it sometimes takes a while to get off. There's a train (which we didn't take) from the nearby station.

“Peace in the Pines”

Although situated on the main road through Erdeven the Auberge is set well back and during our 5 night stay we experienced no traffic noise at all. In fact, all was peace and quiet in comfortable, clean and attrractive surroundings.
The owner/chef and his wife are both friendly and welcoming and were ably supported by their pleasant and attentive staff.
The breakfasts were served buffet style and were generous, catering for all tastes.
We ate in the hotel each evening and the set 3 course meals were imaginative, well presented and extremely good value for money.
This is a good base from which to explore this area of southern Brittany and we look forward to our next visit. Recommended without hesitation!

“Excellent! Just what we hoped for”

Auberge du sous bois was fantastic, we're so glad we managed to get a room just by walking up - having been told Carnac was great we quickly realised it was a bit fake and touristy... thank goodness this caught our eye from the road in Erdeven! It was a lot more than we expected, great rooms, a wonderful host and fantastic food - you can't fail with a husband chef and the wife a patisseriere it really was first class throughout.
