“Nice hotel with great restaurant in Blainville-sur-Mer”

You might be disappointed at your first sight of Blainville-sur-Mer as it's rather an unremarkable Norman village. However, it does boast a good hotel with an excellent restaurant in Le Mascadet. In truth, the rooms are nothing special and some boast a decorative style that is pretty unique. But this doesn't take away from the level of service delivered by the hotel or the splendid meals that are served in the restaurant. If you're in the area, maybe after visiting all the D-Day battlefields and en route to Mont St Michel and Brittany, this is a good place to stop and stay for just one or two days. You won't find much to do for any longer but a short stay will do the trick.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear will be quieter as those to the front might be disturbed by early arrivals at the...

“A stay with a difference”

We booked as a stopover. Arriving a little late the proprietor met us at the local tourist office. The staff were wonderful and friendly. The apartment fitted out fantastically well and very clean and comfortable. The restaurant was amazing a mixture of French, Moroccan and Eastern European with a hint of the East. A brilliant experience overall.

“Good one-trick pony act , aggressive lady owner”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2010

We come to the D-Day beach area twice a year from the US . Le Mascaret used to be a delightful jewel of a restaurant and a favorite of ours at its former location in Heugheville-sur-Sienne . The charm seems to have been broken since their ambitious move to a full service faciity (restaurant , hotel , beauty parlor , massage spa...) a couple of years ago.

The cooling remains excellent and refined and Mr Hardy is unquestionably an outstanting chef . However :

- menus seem to never change and the fish of the day is invariably the local cheap "barbue"
- desserts are way under par .
- the new décor is medle (e.g. a painting of a lascivious Asian lady next to a lovely armoire) and embarrassingly kitschy

Since the "graduation" to the new location , the lady owner has kept her high dedication to the job , but her once flexible marketing skills have turned rigid . When my wife barely touched her dessert , finding it unsavory , the lady inquiree why and flatly told her that she did not have proper taste and the problem was not with the dessert but with my wife's taste ...We remained polite but flabbergasted.

In a nutshell , the place can be great if you come just for the food , have a soft spot for "barbue and can do without dessert . It will help if you are prepared for helter skelter settings and don't mind the risk of being lectured on how uneducated your taste buds are.

“Restaurant and Spa both Brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 April 2010

We did not stay here, but for a treat, Mother and Daughter booked into the spa for a morning's treatments, and the family had lunch. Apart from the "Bijoux de Table" on sale at 140 euros which outraged my teen age son, there was nothing to object to. The same teen age son was genuinely impressed with the liquid nitrogen deserts "cooked" at the table. Top marks all round, and so we read in the local paper, a Michelin Star to prove it.

We have just returned from a stay in Normandy and we spent a night at Hotel Le Mascaret.
This was a wonderful experience, from start to end.
The suite was brilliant, the food exquisite and the staff perfect.
Highly recommended establishment
