“Excellent Older Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

Warmly welcomed upon climbing up late one evening from the Oban ferry. The hosts went out of their way to ensure I got something to eat since the restaurant was winding down. Food superb. Had booked the main suite at the front because everything else was reserved. Not disappointed...huge and well-furnished with that prime harbour view. The bathroom was slightly dated. No wireless internet in the rooms, which is a bit of a shame since the television choices were limited (not unusual in the Outher Hebrides). Excellent central base for exploring this beautiful little island.

Room Tip: The suite is prime if you want to splurge!

“You will not be better looked after in all of Scotland”

We spent part of our honeymoon in this hotel in early September. We could not have been better looked after. The hotel is small, but sparkling clean and the seafood and game restaurant is just perfect, particularly if you can get a table overlooking the harbour. Both the game and the seafood beautifully cooked and presented and the wine list is surprisingly good. Best breakfast in a hotel ever goes to the poached eggs and haddock. Mmm!
The loveliest thing was the personal service. We were so well looked after. I loved this place and I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with a view of the bay and Kisimul Castle

“Excellent location and staff”

Arrived late after a very rough crossing from Oban and were welcolmed by the staff and offered a very welcoming bowl of soup and bread. Just enough to send us to bed nice and warm. Hotel clean and in good order with excellent restaurant for evening meal and great big breakfasts. Made some simple suggestions to make a good hotel even better such as having an adjustable shower head, not everyone is 6 ft tall!.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms at the end near the lively bar.

“Nice hotel with a great view!”

The Castlebay Hotel is a nice place to stay on Barra. I was only there from 5pm til 6am as I was catching the early ferry to Oban. The hotel itself is clean and tidy and has a nice reception area. My room (10) had a great view across the bay and was clean and warm (the wether outside was NOT good!). It had a very comfy bed and large bathroom which was slightly dated but clean. The TV had only 3 channels and seems to rely on sky as its input. I got bbc1, 2 and ITV and that was it. No wi fi in the room unfortunately, you had to go down to the communal lounge to get a signal. The food in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced. The hotel will take £10 off per guest if you miss breakfast as I did due to the early ferry. I'd definitely stay here again if I was in Barra and had to get the early ferry (as it's literally a stones throw away!).

“Very good standards, excellent food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

This older hotel is in good condition and our room [12] was clean and tidy with good quality bedding and towels and complimentary toiletries.
The view from this room is wonderful but slightly noisy when the early ferry arrives and departs [and with the odd drunks from the public bar arguing at closing time].
The crowning glory was the restaurant - I had scallops and pancetta as a main course and my wife, lamb tournedos - we both agreed that the food was as good as the best we've
tasted any where in our travels - compliments to the chef.
The manager seemed to be continually training the staff who we thought were very good anyway.
Not cheap at £95.00 b&b but it is a captured market.
We will return on our next trip to Barra.

Room Tip: Room 12 overlooks Kisimul Castle and Vatersay.
