“The Best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

Staying at Strumhor was one of the best B&B experiences I have ever had, and I have had plenty. Starting with the common areas: There is a lovely bay-windowed sunroom overlooking the water. You can watch the sunset, see the tide rippling in or peer through their telescope. There is also a comfy interior sitting room. The house is loaded with books -- popular, classics and travel; there is a wide selection of quality DVDs.

The owners have prepared a large binder that includes a list of their favorite (mostly outdoor) activities specific to this neck of the woods. They’ve also thoughtfully prepared a long list of specific walks and hikes, along with relevant details, length, level of difficulty, what they’re like in the wet, which are good for bird-watching, etc. Wow, these hosts are enthusiastic about what their area has to offer and about sharing it with their guests.

Our congenial host, Olga, was tuned into what we wanted to do. She gave us dining suggestions that fit in with our taste (if you like good food, you must go to Coast in Oban; “Lite Bites” before 6:30 make fine dining very affordable) and she sent us on an excursion to a place we didn’t know about (the stones at Kilmartin) that was just fabulous. [If you are planning a trip around Scotland, the Oban area is a good place to include as part of your itinerary, especially if you are into the outdoors.]

The dining area has private tables and the breakfast is fabulous. Guests can select from a fairly extensive menu the night before, either a traditional Scottish breakfast, or one of many other breakfasts, including kippers; pancakes; croissant, cheese and meat platter and more. Breakfast time is flexible; you just need to decide the night before.

Our room (Morvern) was very small, but I have no complaints; I consider myself lucky that we were able to get a booking at all on short notice. I’d suggest booking way in advance if you are a couple, but even if you need to squeeze in to Morvern, the common areas are so appealing it takes the edge off.

The small space was organized efficiently. Everything is white and fresh-looking; windows open; comfy bed with four good pillows and comforter; extra blanket; nice wood hangers in closet; big mirror. Bathroom is all new, very clean. Good shower; nice towels; towel warmer; big mirror; nice brand amenities.

I guess I need to make some negative comments so that this doesn’t look like a puff-piece. But: small ground floor double is right off dining area and entrance way to house, so it’s not that private. (However, there aren’t many guests, so the impact should be minimal.) Also, it was hard to find a strong WiFi signal. What negatives there are would never deter me from coming back; I loved this place.

Room Tip: Book early, especially for the larger double.

Wow, this is so kind! We're really glad you enjoyed your stay with us and I'm just sorry we weren't able to offer you Lorn, our big room, as I'm well aware that guests used to American rooms find Morvern small. But thanks very much for your nice comments regardless!

“Great B & B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2011

This is one of the best places we stayed during our 5 week tour.
We were very comfortable and just loved our room (Lorn) The bed was lovely. We had our own tiny sitting room but could use the conservatory and lounge too.
The weather was terrible but we were very welcome to 'stay indoors' as long as we liked.
Wonderful views. The falls are amazing.
Thank you Olga and Tony for looking after us so well.

“The Finest B&B in the West Coast of Scotland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2011

This establishment provides the best quality of accommodation that I have ever found anywhere on my travels. To call it a B&B is a joke, it is a five star boutique hotel, with fantastic organic food, served in a lovely environment. The house is situated, overlooking the Falls of Laura at Connel Bridge with beautiful views from the conservatory and has a lovely lounge with all facilities. The owners are very welcoming and friendly and if you are interested in canoeing? Tony, one of the proprietors is a fully trained and certified canoeist and you can book lessons (To Learn or go white water.
Olga & Tony Will ensure that your stay is Special and I cannot emphasise how great this place is.

Thank you for your kind review. We do appreciate that you have taken time to post it and are very happy that you enjoy your stays with us. Just for the sake of other guests, I should point out that although I do use organic food where possible, my priority is Fair Trade and local. Tony does indeed offer river kayaking, but more oftten it's sea kayaking. Hope to see you back again before too long!

“Consistently high standard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

This was my third (or was it fourth?) stay with Olga and Tony this year and as ever it was faultless. It was fairly late when we got there on the first evening but this was no issue and we were welcomed in and provided with cakes and hot drinks - perfect after a day on the roads of Mull.

Our room (Etive) was upstairs with stunning views out over Loch Etive and the Falls of Lora. It is actually a single room but by prior arrangement (ok, a pleading email) Olga had very kindly agreed to put a camp bed in the room to make it a temporary twin room, as the other single was already occupied. Both rooms upstairs (I had stayed in the other one on a previous visit) are comfortable and spacious and well appointed with tea/coffee making facilities and chocolates and biscuits provided and replenished after each night.

We only had breakfast on the last morning as we had to be out at 5am on the other one in order to catch a ferry. I opted for poached eggs on toast and Sam went for the full Scottish - neither plate had anything left on it at the end and it set us up perfectly for the day.

I'd absolutely recommend this B&B to anyone. I'd go so far as to say I'd not wish to stay anywhere else when near Oban!

“A relaxing place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We Strumhor because of the good reviews and low room rate. We also liked the idea of a place to relax (the conservatory). We were delighted with our choice. Olga greeted us warmly and our stay began with tea and cake in the conservatory. Perfect. Also in the conservatory were binoculars and a varied selection of books and magazines. In the sitting room next door were more books, comfy seating and dvds.
Our room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Olga was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. We did consider some more expensive hotels and b+bs but can't imagine that we could have had a more pleasant stay anywhere else.
