“Highly recommended hotel and restaurant”

My wife and I stayed in Monpazier as a resting point on our way to Medoc. We fell in love with Monpazier and regretted that we couldn't stay longer. The hotel Edward 1er is on the edge of town but is only a short walk from the town square. The hotel is owned and run by a delightful couple who a genuinely welcoming and friendly. Their attitude towards the quality of the service experience is also obviously understood by all the staff we encountered.
The hotel is set within a walled garden with a swimming pool and is a beautifully picturesque setting. I suspect that there is a fair variety of room sizes and as we booked our room with very little notice, our room was a little cramped but fine for one night, a comfortable bed and a modern bathroom is all we really need.
We had dinner in the restaurant, which was excellent. Probably not the best meal we had in France but for quality of produce, ambience, service and value, it was close to our most enjoyable. Special mention should be made of the excellent wine list and the helpful guidance of the owner.
Finally, give yourself time to borrow on the hotel's bikes and have a gentle relaxing ride around the town and surrounding countryside. Highly recommended

“Excellent well run Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Edward 1er Hotel we had a room on the top floor the views are amazing, we found the overall decor to be fine, the stair carpet is a little worn but in my view it adds charm to what appears to be a family run hotel with character.
The Breakfast is possibly slightly expensive, but the quality of the produce was all very fresh. There are plenty of areas both inside and outside to just sit, read have a drink and relax.
We ate out at two local restaurants Bistrot 2 and La Bastide both of which were within a 5 minute leisurely stroll from the Hotel, both of which we would recommend .
We were made very welcome, and would have no hesitation staying here again in the near future.

“Loved this hotel - does need a little updating”

This hotel was a fun surprise for us. It is located next to the main square of this charming town. The staff is very kind and helpful - Pauline is a hidden gem - and the owners are equally kind and considerate. It does need a little help, but that would not deter me from staying here again sometime soon. We were in the Edward 1er Suite - up one long flight of stairs - no elevator. The carpeting on the stairs is treadbare and frankly, a bit of a hazzard on someone tripping on it. Our room was large and airy with a nice big bathroom, jucuzzi tub and steam shower. We could get wifi in our room (free) and the parking was in a lot just behind the hotel (free). My only problem with the room and the reason I would ask for the suite behind it is that it was very warm during our stay and in order to cool the room down at night we needed to open the windows. Just below the windows are tables for the restaurant - and we didn't mind hearing their voices as everyone was just having soft conversations, but what we did mind was that they were allowed to smoke there and the cigarette smell wafted up into our room. Luckily, that was all shut down around 11pm. There is a lovely swimming pool area and I would hope they could have a smoking area down by the pool.

We ate in the hotel restaurant the second night, Bistro 2 the first night - also owned and run by the hotel. Food in both places was excellent - the lamb was exceptional. We loved the town and the access to Surlat and other towns close by. Coming back each evening was kind of like coming home. I would definitely stay here again.

One word of warning - we arrived on October 2. Apparently many of these small towns just kind of close it up after September 30th and call it a year. Lots of the cute shops were closed or only open on weekends. If you want to see this town at the best time, I would do it between April to the end of September.

Room Tip: If you don't do stairs, ask for a ground floor room as there are no elevators.

“Recommend!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

We were greeted with genuine warmth and kindness early as our 9 year old was sick and they let us check in early .Our room was on the top floor with windows overlooking the bastide, the en-suite bathroom nestled on the side. The dinner was the excellent both nights, and a comfort to be able to periodically check on our 'invalid'. The hotel also arranged a doctors visit.
The town is charming, with lots to do in the area- although my husband did most of it solo! Don't miss the Chateau Biron.

“Extraordinary Experience, Excellent Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

The moment we arrived at this mini castle we knew this was going to be a memorable experience. We were greeted with genuine warmth and kindness after a long redeye from Washington, DC. Our well appointed room was on the top floor with two windows overlooking the bastide, the en-suite bathroom nestled on the side. The Friday evening dinner was the best we had in our week long SW France discovery trip, from the delicately prepared foie gras and trufles entrees to the 2 desserts we smartly shared because we couldn't choose between divine confections. It continued for the next 3 days with breakfast in the garden, strolls in the bastide village, visits to other nearby bastide villages and dips in the soothing pool.... Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you just make the right choice. This was both. Don't miss this chance to make your memory of Southwet France unforgettable.
