“for the money, it was bloody awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2010

We had 2 nights there on the way to Perigord.Admittedly the weather was freezing and wet.We had one of the larger suites,St Louis, which was spacious, but the decor was very shabby, particularly the bathroom and toilet fit-outs.The windows were all cracked, the furniture cheap and nasty, and the entry from the main castle to the chambres some grubby old matting, concealing some unfinished works. We were told when booking that there were renovations until May 1st and that the hotel was closed until that date. When we arrived, there were exposed wires in places, the pool was filthy and we were not happy with the overall standard of the place. When one is paying 220 euro per night, one expects much better than this.It was a discrace! “Magical”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2008

The castle is in a very quiet village and looks wonderful from any direction. We took the most expensive room for two nights. The slightly odd thing is that you arrive when the castle is open to visitors and have to go to the ticket office. The person selling tickets checks you in and takes you to the room. You are also pointed to the breakfast room. Our room was really memorable and had obviously been newly decorated and furnished. One down side was that the WC was in a small room off the bedroom and to wash your hands afterwards you had to cross the huge bedroom to go to the bathroom opposite – and we are not talking small distances! Not very convenient in the night. The huge windows let in lots of country air and hardly any noise. Breakfast was a bit of a let down. You see no staff, only other guests. Tables are already laid with croissants, jam and butter and there is an urn of coffee and tea facilities. I would have expected there to be cereals, cheese and cold meats as well. All the public areas, staircases, corridors and breakfast room, need a bit of TLC. They need redecorating and arranging in a better way – the corridors look as though all the spare tables and chairs from functions have been placed there! They really don’t match the lovely bedroom we enjoyed. That said, this type of accommodation is quirky to start with and if you don’t mind this sort of thing then I would thoroughly recommend it. Incidentally, the village auberge is just a five minute walk and serves some of the best food we had in France – but you do need to book!

  • Liked — our room and closeness to village restaurant
  • Disliked — untidy and poorly decorated public areas

“The castle life!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2008

Friends gave us this present and I must say that it was a real good idea.

It's a real castle with a real story and you will have the opportunity to sleep a real historical bedroom.

The room we had is called "Louise Borgia". It is spacious and with an elevated bed. The bathroom is also very nice. Nevertheless the room is a little bit dark...

You must know that it's a little bit cold and that it is also humid.

We also decided to have our diner in the castle and I do not regret. It was really good! Same thing for the breakfast!

The staff is very nice and a visit of the castle is done at 7pm. I'm french so I don't know if it is possible to have explantions in english or other.

To conlude : If you have the opportunity, just do it!

  • Liked — The castle itself!!!
  • Disliked — Nothing at all.
