“A real gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

It's off the beaten track this place, but a real gem. It feels like a real piece of living history and the lady proprietor is really nice and helpful to English guests. The rooms have real character and the views out through the huge windows over the gardens are fabulous. It has an outdoor pool, which was of a decent size and heated. We stopped on a demi pension basis, which I can really recommend. The food was great quality and we were totally packed out. Breakfast was good too. There's nothing really near to the hotel, but it's very peaceful and great for an overnight stop or a base for touring.

Room Tip: the top floor mezzanine room was nice.

“A little slice of heaven!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

The Chateau is located in the French countryside. The food was out of this world! Our room was wonderful with shower heads on all walls. By all means, go out of your way to stay here!

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2009

Went to this place as part of a half board package through Great Escapes. Normally you get to choose from a reasonable menu with their packages, but no, here was a special 'demi-pension' menu with very limited choice. we were even told we had a room upgrade - dread to think what the room was supposed to be like otherwise. We Had beams everywhere. I would be worried if there was a fire in this place. Furthermore the charges for drinks was extortionate - 20 euros for 2 G&T's. Lovely couple that run it, but the place does not deliver. Food was nothing special and very small portions

“Lovely hotel, friendly staff, fantastic grounds and location.”

Lovely hotel, friendly staff, fantastic grounds and location.

A well priced hotel with reasonable restaurant, in idyllic grounds.

Location. Deep in the Normandy countryside, well away from any towns or noise, a real country getaway (a car is essential!). The grounds are well kept and the Chateau setting is a fantastic site upon arrival.

Room. Our room was a split level room, with an entrance and dressing room on one level and the main bedroom and bathroom above (in the Chateau roof). The view from the room was fantastic, just in line with the tops of the trees. the only noise we could here were owls hooting at night and donkeys braying during the day (make sure you say hello to the neighbouring donkeys if you stay at this hotel)

The restaurant is of good standard, the service a little variable (we weren't presented with a menu or asked if we wanted an aperitif for some time on one night). the food is generally good, with the starters and deserts leading the way. For some reason the main courses were not to the same standard. The cheese trolley is excellent and the wine menu varied and reasonably priced.

Overall a good hotel to stay at for a country, get away from it all, holiday, reasonably priced with friendly staff.

“A gem that needs polishing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2009

The setting of the Chateau du Landel is a clue to the experience of staying there. It is nestled in the heart of the Normandy countryside, set in its own landscaped park, reeking of the opulence of a bygone era.

The welcome was warm and friendly, the room (on the top floor with a mezzanine) was very comfortable with a good bathroom and plenty of space, though not for tall people or those who suffer from vertigo! However the wallpaper, which covered all surfaces except the floor was peeling in several places and the plastic matress protector on the bed inhibited restful sleep as it creased beneath us and over heated the bed.

The evening meal was a disappointment and was not value for money. The petits legumes that came with the piece de veau consisted of a sprig of overcooked broccoli, half a tomato and two pieces of deep fried celery. The tarte du jour was tired and presented on its own with no embellishment. One expects something a little more imaginative for a 40 euro menu.

However, the park, the pool, the attentive service and the setting balanced these negatives. With a bit of attention this place could be wonderful.
