“Excellent food, but hotel not that great”

Stayed overnight on return from south of France
We were unprepared for the fairy tale nature of the resturant/hotel, and I dont mean happy ever after. It is like a cottage which is completely dwarfed by a huge grain silo right behind it. Whilst care had obviously been taken, the internal decor and garden were far too fussy for our taste.
The village, whilst in a pretty riverside setting, is quite run down and unattractive, and there being no bar we were forced to take a beer in the hotel, which at 5.50 euros per demi, was not cheap.
Dinner was very good, tradtional french fare. however depsite the fact we had been in the bar earlier, and watched a fire being lit in the dining room, when we came down, we were told that this smaller dining room containg the welcoming fire was full and we were seated in the much larger (at least 20 tables) dining room with no fire and only one other table occupied. As it was a cold miserable evening, this felt very bleak and like having to press your nose on the window and watch others having a good time, especially as the staff had to pass our table to reach the other room. With more care the staff who were around earlier might have advised us to make a request to be in the nicer dining room.
The woman I took to be the owner was pleasant enough and so was a charming young waiter, the maitre d' however was charmless to the point of being rude.
This is a restaurant with rooms. Our room was very small, pretty basic and did not justify the price 105 euros
In short this is a good restaurant, which is indeed in Burgundy and charges accordingly, but it is not the Burgundy of rolling hills, beautiful villages, and endless vineyards

“Not as good as one would expect”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2010

Maybe my expectations were too high, but this hotel is close to a very busy road; the room was big but smelly; restaurant nice but overpriced. Have stayed in better hotels in the region.

“Trying very hard”

What a lovely building, landscaped garden and interior - what a pity it is right next to a grain cooperative with huge silos. If this doesn't put you off, it's excellent otherwise. the village and river are very attractive.
The chef is aspiring and is very good - inventive, interesting, tasty and very well presented.
