We had a most enjoyable stay at the Domaine du Roncemay, but have never seen so many dogs in one hotel. On one day of our stay we counted seven, in a hotel with 15 rooms.
We all quite like dogs, but draw the line at sharing a very small breakfast room with a huge old Labrador with intestinal gas problems……..There was no excuse for this, as there was a perfectly good terrace and the weather was very warm, so its owners could easily have sat outside. I suppose the hotel cannot be held responsible for its guests’ lack of consideration or manners. At dinner, another guest had her Chihuahua –type dog on her lap and allowed it to eat out of her plate. We actually took a photo, as we were sure no-one would believe us!
Apart from this quibble, we found the rooms small but attractive and very comfortable, although the air conditioning was quite useless.
The food was really good and, contrary to some other contributors here, we found the maitre d’hôtel extremely helpful and funny. Perhaps the other writers didn’t get his deadpan French humour – it can’t have been a language problem as his English was excellent.
Service otherwise was rather haphazard, and some of the staff were inefficient and lacked motivation. A pity, as the location is exceptional and the hotel has great potential.
