We stayed here the night before embarking on our Moorings sailboar cruise.
This, unfortunatley, was one of the hotels that the Moorings had recommended.
Suffice to say, that Marigot Bay is something out of a postcard. However, JJ's is not on the water, nor is the Bay visible. Also, to get to the water, you have to walk through a delapidated, unattended part of the resort; cross a boardwalk through a smelly, trash-laden mangrove swamp through, what they call their restaurant (more about that later).
Only then do you see the ugly end of the Bay. To get anywhere you have to pay the Bay ferrymen $5 US a person to take you anywhere....and that's not round trip! The ride is only a few hundred yards, essentially.
The rooms at JJ's were not bad. The three teenagers that we took had their own room but the air conditioning nor the fan worked. When they called the front desk about the problem, someone did show up to pull the string on the fan, which did not work, of course, and meerly uttered "sheet....it doesn't work" and left and was not seen again.
They had a miserable evening. JJ's did agree to subtract 30% for their room that night.
Now, for the supposed restaurant.......I did find out that this establishment is not owned by JJ's but apparently is leased to someone, who, I take it, is French. I arrived at the "restaurant" the next morning at 7:30 a.m. There were two persons setting tables who did not greet me. After sitting at the bar for 15 minutes and not being addressed, I asked if I could have a cup of coffee. The waitress was not at all friendly and informed me that they did not open until 8:00 a.m. I told her that my family would like to eat breakfast there, and, since I had noticed several pots of coffee were already brewed, could I have a cup? No response, I finally helped myself and my family finally arrived.
There were several tables that had been "dressed up" with table clothes, but the others were in severe disrepair. When the rest of my family arrived we were told we could not sit at the "dressed" tables because they were reserved. We were placed at a table with not silverware or placemats. The table had about a 15 degree grade to it and the kids quickly noticed that there were ants crawing on the table. The group that had reserved the nice tables were obviously French, as was the man running the place. We finally obtained some breakfast and basically ate with our plates off of the table. We had to ask for napkins, salt, and pepper. We were charged $50 US for this experience. Needless to say, no tip was given.
I find it incredulous that the people who live on these islands do not know who is behind their paychecks. I found this to generally be the case throughout our entire stay. People can say alot of things about the US, but upon re-entering this fine country, the serive improved !00%. We entered an atypically cold Atlanta, had a pleasant customs experience, and were taken to our hotel in our shorts by someone who went out of their way for us! Nuf said. Don't go to JJ's.
