“There must be better places to stay in the area!”

We stayed at Hotel Granjita, a few miles outside Santa Clara, a town known for little other than a connection with Che Guevara. It was just a one night stop en route back to Havana. The hotel is used mainly by tour groups, and is really only suitable for groups as the organisation revolves round their needs.

The idea is good, thatched chalets in a holiday camp style, but does not come off. The thatch has long since disappeared from most of the hexagonal concrete chalets, leaving them looking like concrete pillboxes. Inside our room felt like a pillbox too. It was freezing cold inside. Outside the exterior lights did not work, which made going out at night a bit of an adventure.

The reception area was planned to be opposite the dining room, but has been abandoned many years ago, and that building fended in corrugated iron.

We went to the pool bar for a drink, but were put off by a dozen local youths drinking, making a lot of noise and all jumping in fully clothed. They were round the pool for nearly three hours which effectively put it off limits to us.

As it was a long way from town we decided to eat in - however as the hotel does not appear to cater for independent guests, they only offer a buffet, and refused to serve us anything a la carte - after our stay at an AI the days before arriving here, we had no inclination for a buffet again. So, as they did not want to cook a meal for us, we retired to our "room" and had a banana.

My overall feeling is hat there must be better in the area for a one night stop, and if you are part of a group staying longer, then my condolences

“Charming rooms in scenic location”

The hotel is in lovely grounds set out of town. it has thatched rooms, with large beds, air conditioning, TV and fridge. The bathroom was large although the shower head was broken so it was a bit like standing under a hose pipe! There is a safe that you get for a small fee - we could not get it to work and so the man came and changed the door!
The food in the restaurant was buffet and fine.
The pool was lovely although the sun beds were covered in bird droppings so I sat on a chair ( which was clean).
The TV had HBO and my husband ended up watching a film rather than more sunbathing. Excellent reception and as the room was cool he was more than happy.
In the evening the bugs were out in force so remember to taken repellant.

“Lovely clean and good food”

This is a great hotel, we stayed over christmas as a break from casa particulares and wernt disappointed.
One receptionist wasnt very friendly or helpful but the rest were lovely and the bar staff were fab too. We did tip but only 1 tip at the end of the night not after every drink. I think we sampled almost every cocktail on the menu and can recommend them all!
The pool area was nice, we didnt watch the entertainment and unfortunately the weather wasnt great so only went in the pool once but it was nice to sit around when it wasnt raining.
The room was lovely and clean, the maids were brilliant making cute animals out of the towels!!
The food was really good, cuba is definately not renowed for its food but there was alot of variety and it was all tasty, definately better than we had been eating for the rest of our trip!!
The only real downside of the hotel is the distance in to town but to be honest 5cuc in a taxi wasnt alot and other than the Che memorial there wasnt anything very exciting about the town so it was quite nice to be outside in the quiet.

“In agreement.”

PricillaBath, 4 March 10 has got it about right. Be very careful at the bar and watch them like a hawk or your Pina Colada may not have any Rum and the waiter then expects a tip stay at the bar and watch them make it, pay and then take it away yourself. Food is OK. Only stayed two nights, probably enough. Che's ashes are here in Santa Clara as is a small museum, well worth a look.
