“Our second visit. Can't wait for our third. We love this hotel!”

We returned to Anacaona 9 months after our first visit. We stayed there Jan 24-31, 2012. our visit there in 2012 was just as nice as our visit in 2011. The new owners have been true to their word and improvements have been made from our last visit. First and foremost, our unit was one of the Superior (king size bed) one room suite. The unit's bathroom had been completely renovated with all new tile, vanity, sink and mirrors. (See photos). One added improvement to the room was the addition of a full length mirror that was much needed. AC, mini fridge, bed and bedding all very comfortable. We had a third floor unit which afforded us a nice view of the resort and a partial view of the ocean. (See photos)

On our last visit, we were unable to receive wi-fi internet connection from our room on a consistent basis. Through the installation of a new and more powerful router recently installed in the lobby of the hotel, our wi-fi connection worked GREAT from our room! This was a great improvement for our needs.

Every building of the resort also had new roofs installed, giving the resort a nice look, with a uniform color to all the roofs. It was also apparent that the outside and inside of buildings had been freshly painted as well.

An organic garden of fruit trees and plants have been planted so that by fall of 2012 or early 2013, the hotel will be using their own organic fruits and vegetables on premises.

Another nice improvement was the complimentary coffee and tea table that was set up in the lobby of the hotel every morning. Large styrofoam cups with lids are included making it easy to grab a couple of hot drinks early in the morning to walk back to your room with. I also should mention each room has a new "single cup" coffee maker located in the room with coffee pouches if you want to brew an individual cup of coffee yourself.

The staff is always super friendly and helpful. We have to single out Prudence and twin sisters Tweedy and Soya who always have a smile and hearty hello to greet us.

This hotel is a gem and a very different alternative to those looking for a unique and moderately priced place to stay. There are lots of food options available to you within walking distance if you stay at Anacaona. There's also other beach options very close by if Meads Bay waters are too rough. Cove Bay is less than a 5 minute car ride away on the caribbean side of the island where the waters tend to be lake-like 99% of the time.

For those who enjoy lobster, the hotel's Firefly restaurant has the best lobster salad for lunch ANYWHERE on the island! Everyone we came in contact with who tried the lobster salad for lunch, agreed with us that it was amazing! It is also affordably priced (under $20!!!!!). The hotel would be wise to advertise this delicious option on the beach to draw non guests to their restaurant for lunch, since Firefly restaurant is not visible to those walking the beach.

Additionally, we have sampled burgers and fries from all other restaurants located on Meads Bay and the burgers and fries from Firefly were also the best and comparable in price to Straw Hat and Blanchard's beach shack. The burgers were thick, tasty and grilled to perfection, served on a large size slightly toasted roll.

The resort also upgraded their beach chairs on the beach and they now also have a "beach bar" located on the beach for cold drinks, beer, frozen drinks, etc.

Delroy Lake Sr. is the general manager of the resort and he's hands on and can be easily found as he's always around, making sure his guests are being attended to. From our experience, if there are any issues, they are dealt with swiftly and efficiently to our satisfaction.

Robin and Sue Ricketts are the owners and experienced hoteliers. Make sure to attend the Monday evening complimentary cocktail hour where you can meet Delroy, Robin and Sue. All three are so charming to converse with, especially if you are at all curious like we are when it comes to the Caribbean island lifestyle and how things operate. Thank you Robin & Delroy for sharing some "inside story" stuff....lol. And consider writing that book of your years of experience as it would make a fascinating read.......at least to us!

We can't wait to return as with each visit, the owners, management and staff make us feel more and more like friends returning for a visit. We can't say enough nice things about this little boutique hotel.

“Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Checked in on Jan 7 for a 11 night stay. First trip to Anguilla and the whole trip (including Anacaona) lived up to our high expectations. We traveled with our two teenage daughters so we reserved a two bedroom suite (Room 306, the Hughes Suite). The room was a stand alone building significantly separated from all other buildings. The suite had a large screened in area, two good sized bedrooms w/ their own bathrooms and another large room that combined a living room w/ a tv and a full kitchen. We were very pleased with the size of the place.
Pros: 1) the beds had new matresses that were very comfortable. Usually my wife and I can't agree on what defines a good matress (too hard or too soft) but we both thought the Anacaona matress was great. 2) the kitchen was full sized and helped cut down on meal expenses (we had breakfast in the room nearly every day. Since everyone wakes up at different times (teenage daughters) the ability to eat whenever we woke up & not have to wait for others was a real plus). 3) the grounds, the whole area had recently been planted w/ new trees, there was a garden right outside our room where they grew fresh vegetables for the restaurant and two pools that were very nice. The "second" pool was right outside our room and was practically our private pool. I only saw other people at this pool twice. Of course w/ Mead's Bay a two minute walk away, most people (including us) usually chose the beach over the pool. 4) the people: every single employee of the hotel that we talked to was VERY friendly, outgoing, talkative and genuinely hoping that we were enjoying our stay. The people on the whole island were very friendly but the people at Anacaona were one step above almost everyone else. 5) the bar for a late night drink. What a great way to close out one perfect day after another. My wife and I typically would go to the bar after going out to dinner and spend some time chatting w/ the twins and Yvonne (hi girls, we miss you!) & others staying at the hotel. Just a very cool way to wrap up the day. 6) upgraded internet! When we first arrived we couldn't get internet access in our room. The girls needed to go up near the main pool, the lobby or hang out in the front hammocks to email, facebook or skype their friends. About three days into our stay we met the guy that was upgrading the wi-fi (he and his wife were also from SoCal) and he said the upgrade would be done in a couple days. It was done in one day and not only were we able to get access in our room but also at the beach. With the NFL playoffs just getting started and a need to keep in touch w/ NHL scores, internet access was a real plus
Cons: I rated the hotel a 4 but quite frankly the place is a 3 star and the friendliness of the employees and the value bring it up to a 4 star. The renovation of the hotel needs to continue to bring the facility up to a four star and the value & friendliness can make it a 5 star. For example, none of the screen doors out to the patio from the kitchen worked. That's about a $100 upgrade that would make a big improvement, the roof of our suite was made to have patio furiture on it. The views of the ocean and of the hotel grounds are outstanding from the roof. But there was one old, plastic table and one chair up there. A couple/few hundred dollars spent on quality patio furniture and a gas grill would be a HUGE upgrade to make that area a big plus. In it's current state we hardly went up there.
Bottom Line: We had a great stay. The Anacaona people were great! If you're looking for a place like the Viceroy then this place is not it (and we found that a big plus). If you're looking for comfortable accomodations at a good price this is your place.
Anacaona, we will be back!!!

Room Tip: for families, check into the suites that are separatred from the main hotel building

Thank you so much for your review and we are all thrilled that you enjoyed your stay with us. We do try very hard to make our guests feel comfortable and we do go out of our way to accommodate them. We are glad that you enjoyed your bed! We also appreciate your comments and our other guests comments because this does help us to improve in all areas of the property. We consider our guests our eyes & ears and since taking over the hotel we have listened to them in many areas to improve. So glad that you got to meet Tom our IT person and you are both from Ca. We hope to see you back again soon.

“Anacaona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We have stayed 10 times in this charming home away from home.
The character of the place draws us in each and every year and we love the people that we have met there who we consider liken to family. There is an ease, comfort, joy, and sensibility to the Anacaona that means "happy" to us. The new owners share that passion and have made a commitment to enhance that sense. Its unique and lovely.

“Great Service, beautiful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We arrived way too early to check in, but were greeted warmly, with a cool wet face towel and a cold rum punch. The hotel is a bit older but is very clean and well maintained, with a very nice garden/lawn area that leads to Meads Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Think sugary white sand and crystal clear water. The area is close to several other nice beaches and high end restaurants. Tip: check out Blanchard's Beach Shack, about a half mile down the beach.

“Boutique hotel?”

Positives -
The staff are excellent, helpful, cheery and do their best at all times with seemingly limited resources.
It is very close to Meads Bay and a variety of restaurants.
It is a good base from which to explore the Island.
Negatives
It is run down.
The new owners attempts at renovation appear to have been undertaken on a very constrained budget. It looks and feels dated.
Whatever a boutique hotel is - this is not one - the owners would do well to visit what a modern "boutique" hotel looks like and offers in terms of ambience, faciiities etc .
No attempt is made to keep guests on site - consequently the hotel feels empty most of the time.
The walk to the beach is through unkempt, badly lit and unmaintained garden and rubble.

Anguilla and Meads Bay in particular is expensive and this hotel is more affordable BUT there is much better value to be found elsewhere on the island.

Thank you for your comments on the hotel. We do appreciate your positive comments on our staff and we are very proud of the extra mile that they go to accommodate our guests. We are very sorry that you feel that the hotel is run down? We have made considerable improvements over the past year and a half since our owners purchased the property. The former La Sierena was not in a good state when they purchased the hotel. The interiors of the rooms were redone in 2010 during our annual closing in the fall. We also changed most of the soft goods and furnishings in the rooms. The 2 & 3 bedroom suites were updated also with new kitchens & appliances. This past year during our annual closing, we mainly concentrated on the exterior of the buildings and the gardens in addition we have further updated our rooms and suites, put on new roof tiles, changed balcony roofs. In January 2012 we completed a major update of our wireless internet system which is now available throughout the entire property. We have also enhanced the Hotel with fruit and palm trees, and an organic vegetable and herb garden and even a small fountain for our guest to cast their wishes. Anacaona is not a modern Boutique Hotel and not all Boutique Hotels have the same modern design, there are many Boutique hotels around the world that are designed in different decors (depending on their locations) and are considered a small stylish hotel.

Anacaona is owned by hoteliers Robin and Sue Ricketts. They have helped create many celebrated Caribbean resorts over the past 30 years (two of them are near-neighbors right on Anguilla, Malliouhana Hotel and Cap Juluca) but this is the first property they have truly owned themselves. With Anacaona we want to go beyond the usual attractions of island resorts by making it a fun place where visitors can enjoy the relaxing pleasures of a beachy hotel but also come face-to-face with authentic local culture. In short, we plan to transform Anacaona into nothing less than the cultural entertainment center of Anguilla. We offer special weeks for visitors interested in wellness, culinary, crafts, and adventure. We also have our wonderful "Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre" on Thursday evenings, which I do hope that you may have had the pleasure of seeing during your visit. Our hotel is a small hotel, so sometimes it may seem that our guests are not present, mainly due to the fact that they are on the beach, relaxing on their balconies and yes some may be out for the day exploring the Island or one of our 33 other beaches and over 100 restaurants.

We also do pride ourselves on our location and our value for the dollar which you have mentioned in your post. We try our best to offer the best possible experience to all of our guests, and we do appreciate any comments that they may have to improve our property. We have listened to many of our guests’ suggestions and we have implemented them together with continued training of the staff and improvement of Anacaona.

We do hope that you will return to Anguilla in the future and experience the additional improvements that we have planned for the near future for the property.
Have a wonderful 2012!
