“3s a charm”

My husband and I just returned from our 3rd visit to Viceroy Anguilla. It was a superb experience. I have posted on our two previous visits and this was the best of our 3 times visiting Viceroy and our 6th trip to Anguilla. And it is important to note that the other two visits were excellent as well!!!

Our room, 103, was phenomenal. The view from our sprawling deck was gorgeous, the layout and appointments in our king ocean view suite with 1.5 bath and butlers pantry was beyond our expectations, and, very important to us, the air circulation and air conditioning was PERFECT. We are already saving our pennies for a return visit and a stay in the same suite. Location was ideal as well, near the stunning adult infinity pool and Sunset Bar, one of the most appealing places we've ever been.

While the Viceroy is larger than a lot of hotels we prefer, the layout lends itself to a feeling of intimacy and privacy. Never crowded although the hotel was far busier than on our past two visits, there are 3 stunning pools and two gorgeous beaches, a magnificent spa and sports centers including a fun basketball state of the art court, climbing wall and a new tennis shop with outdoor tvs that really felt very up to date. We used all of the mentioned facilities and had a fantastic breakfast buffet daily by one of the pools. Outdoor yoga and beach boot camp were so very special and made us really feel like we were on vacation.

My husband and I were particularly struck by a major difference in the attentiveness, friendliness and purposefulness of the staff at every level. From the valets, to registration, conceirge, room service, beach pool and bar attendants, Richard A. the amazingingly personable and helpful General manager, housekeeping, spa staff and operators, it was quite exceptionally improved and positive. We couldn't help but feel appreciated for our being at the hotel and that the staff seemed more content in their roles at the resort. It was palpable. Even their uniforms were stunning fabrics and colors. They looked really neat and professional. Kudos to the hard work that is going in to helping this large staff feel more valued and in turn helping the guests get better service and to feel appreciated for their visit.

Room Tip: We have stayed in roof top suite and loved it, adored room 103 for size, layout and location and vie...

“Not quite yet up to its potential”

Beautiful property; resort advertises three beaches when the only really usable beach is Barnes, shared with other resorts (although this beach is not packed, Viceroy's own beach area is small and can get crowded.)

Service inconsistent, from clueless concierge to outstanding housekeeping and wait staff.

Restaurant availability based on occupancy and other events on site.

Fitness center is nice but classes are $20 each with 25% cancellation fee. Classes should be complimentary at this level resort.

Food and drinks very pricey too, and service is inconsistent even when you factor in "island time."

Had a wonderful spa experience!

I read almost all prior reviews before our trip and can say that Viceroy has worked hard to correct many issues. They are getting there!

“Lovely place, but felt a little chilly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Our stay at the Viceroy was very relaxing and friendly, but physically the hotel struck us as a little chilly. It's a beautiful property, but more apart from its physical surroundings than most places we've stayed in the Caribbean. Views down some of the walkways are gorgeous and dramatic, focusing your attention on the jewel-like blue Caribbean everywhere. Yet it also felt like most natural Anguilla vegetation had been removed in favor of coconut palms (not native to the island, but all the resorts have them) and elaborate landscaping to create the look of Perfect Caribbean Paradise.

Our room was large with a balcony and its own heated plunge pool. It had a wide open view of the bay and one of the (three) swimming pools. There is beautiful stone of various types everywhere. The bathroom was enormous with a perfect-sized glass shower — with luck it may appear in our home bathroom someday — as well as a tub and a walk-in closet. The linens were Sferra, the toiletries Hermes or Neil George. They have those soft-topped mattresses that many high-end places and guests have fallen in love with, which unfortunately we find unbearably unsupportive. That was made up for, however, by the soothing rhythm of the waves coming in through our window.

The property has three pools — one an infinity pool that my spouse seems determined to replicate even though we live in the chilly northeast — and its own piece of long, beautiful beach. The staff is friendly and helpful, though I was surprised at how often I went to see the concierge and found no one there and only one person at the front desk. Maybe it was just bad timing.

A note for gay travelers: As far as we could tell, we were the only same-sex couple on the premises, which was filled with well-heeled male-female couples and a good-sized conference group from the Edward Jones investment firm. My spouse compared the guest vibe to that of a large suburban country club. There was only friendliness from the staff and fellow guests, and we weren't in search of a party scene, but it still can feel odd to be in a place where you're the only gay people. And a restaurant confirmation that arrived in our room addressed to "Mr. and Mrs." left us feeling a certain inattentiveness.

Anguilla has a larger selection of good restaurants than any other Caribbean destination we've visited, and many of them are toward the west end of the island, where the Viceroy is located. The ones we tried for lunch at the Viceroy were perfectly good (we didn't get to Coba, the flagship restaurant). The maki rolls at the Sunset bar make a very pleasant lunch, and they mix a good martini and a powerful piña colada. There is more interesting food to be had if you venture off the property — Veya was our favorite for dinner, and Straw Hat was our second choice. Giraud's is a good place for pastries or a light breakfast if you're not ready for the Viceroy's very ample breakfast buffet.

All in all we enjoyed our stay quite a lot, but unlike others here, it didn't make us want to rush back.

“Beautiful and luxurious hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We stayed for 7 nights, this past week. Would definitely recommend visiting this beautiful island Anguilla, and The Viceroy, if you enjoy a larger property. The accommodations were excellent, the food is fair.
Generous pool accommodations. Be careful, having high service expectations around the pool areas. Depending on activity, it could take upwards of an hour to get a pot of coffee, as an example. Service just won't compare with a Four Seasons or Las Vantanas al Paraiso in Mexico, as examples.
The staff is willing, but not well trained, and the lack of management supervision and attention to guests is clear.
We would go again, but with lower expectations.
The quality of the beaches is not as high as other properties.
Still we had a very nice time.

Room Tip: If you can afford, choose villa, as much more quiet.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that you didn't experience service comparable with other luxury Caribbean properties. It is an area that we are always striving to improve. We're glad you had an enjoyable stay and hope you'll visit us again soon.

“Loved it and can't wait to return”

My wife and I stayed for a week in January. The hotel is an architectural feat. Every inch of the place is adorned with natural stone, interesting artifacts and cool furnishings. The gym was well equipped and serviced. The food in every restaurant was very good. Room service for breakfast was good. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches you will see. Soft white sand without rocks or shells. Sparkling blue water and a barrier reef to protect it all. Our room was spectacular. Everyone was very friendly and do their best to accommodate. Remember Anguilla like so many other islands in the Caribbean is small with a population of less than 20,000. They live off tourism and do their best to accommodate their guests. After spending a week we decided to return with family and friends in May to celebrate some birthdays. Can't wait. Cap Jaluca has a beautiful beach but the accommodation are tired. Viceroy is the top on Anguilla.
