I originally booked to stay in one of the all-inclusive resorts in Puerta Plata, but had the opportunity to visit La Catalina. I didn't want to go back to the all-inclusive after experiencing my stay in Cabrera. I was hesitant to book there because it wasn't right on the ocean, but after seeing the accomodations I realized why this was why I came to the DR after all.
There was no specific problems with the all-inclusive, but it seemed so like all the other resorts in Mexico. I wasn't able to fully experience what the DR had to offer. The ride to La Catalina was awesome. We were able to see a few small towns where the locals live. Upon arrival to Cabrera, we were greeted by the wonderful staff. They made us feel right at home. Check in was a breeze. The bar was right off the reception area and they made me the most wonderful Mojito with muddled mint that was grown right on the grounds of the hotel. Our room,we opted to stay in the hotel, was spacious and very clean with amazing views of the ocean. Upon arrival for dinner we were promptly greeted by our server who explained the special. Food was perfect, fresh and very reasonably priced. A trip to the hotel for dinner alone would have been worth it. After dinner we headed to the bar where they live music and dancing, small and intimate, but very friendly. The owner and his daughter greeted everyone as if they were family. They recommended lunch on Playa Grande beach (the most memorable meal in my life) and provided transportation to and from. They also recommended a quaint lagoon to swim that was just a couple miles from the hotel. Breakfast was fresh and delicious as was the lunch. There isn't a thing about La Catalina that I would change.
The hotel is currently building a studio where they are planning retreats, yoga, writers, etc. it's very beautiful with unrivaled views of the turquoise ocean. They also have an organic garden on the grounds where they grown thier own fruits, vegtables and spices that they use in the restaurant.
All in all, this was the most memorable trip I've ever experienced and I have to say La Catalina had large part in making it that way.
