“This is why I travelled to the DR!”

I originally booked to stay in one of the all-inclusive resorts in Puerta Plata, but had the opportunity to visit La Catalina. I didn't want to go back to the all-inclusive after experiencing my stay in Cabrera. I was hesitant to book there because it wasn't right on the ocean, but after seeing the accomodations I realized why this was why I came to the DR after all.
There was no specific problems with the all-inclusive, but it seemed so like all the other resorts in Mexico. I wasn't able to fully experience what the DR had to offer. The ride to La Catalina was awesome. We were able to see a few small towns where the locals live. Upon arrival to Cabrera, we were greeted by the wonderful staff. They made us feel right at home. Check in was a breeze. The bar was right off the reception area and they made me the most wonderful Mojito with muddled mint that was grown right on the grounds of the hotel. Our room,we opted to stay in the hotel, was spacious and very clean with amazing views of the ocean. Upon arrival for dinner we were promptly greeted by our server who explained the special. Food was perfect, fresh and very reasonably priced. A trip to the hotel for dinner alone would have been worth it. After dinner we headed to the bar where they live music and dancing, small and intimate, but very friendly. The owner and his daughter greeted everyone as if they were family. They recommended lunch on Playa Grande beach (the most memorable meal in my life) and provided transportation to and from. They also recommended a quaint lagoon to swim that was just a couple miles from the hotel. Breakfast was fresh and delicious as was the lunch. There isn't a thing about La Catalina that I would change.
The hotel is currently building a studio where they are planning retreats, yoga, writers, etc. it's very beautiful with unrivaled views of the turquoise ocean. They also have an organic garden on the grounds where they grown thier own fruits, vegtables and spices that they use in the restaurant.
All in all, this was the most memorable trip I've ever experienced and I have to say La Catalina had large part in making it that way.

“I love this place. Have been 6 times in last 2 years.”

As the title says, I love this place. It's the perfect size, small but not B&B small where you have to interact with an owner all the time. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The rooms are great: simple, tasteful, everything extremely well maintained, fresh and clean. The beds are super comfortable.

As others have said, it's not on the beach, but I like the quiet of being up in the hills, with the views and the cows across the street. I prefer to have a car for the freedom of coming and going as I please without having to rely on their shuttle. Playa Grande, the main beach nearby is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years. It's still beautiful and undeveloped even after all this time.

The food here is excellent, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Again, as others have said, the one thing that could be frustrating is the lack of good Wifi in the rooms. Although I usually come here to get away, I still often need access online and don't necessarily want to drag my laptop to the bar.

I've come here alone and with friends and have never been disappointed. It's a perfect getaway and I recommend it to all my friends.

“Relaxing stay”

Stayed for 3 nights as part of a group from the USA, Australia, Argentina & Italy visiting for a wedding. Nice location with very reasonable prices in the restuarant choice of 2 pools. Only negatives are that the condos have no a/c or television and that you cannot really walk anywhere from the hotel. A/C hotel rooms were lovely with fantastic views of the ocean. If you are up for a relaxing stay of hanging around the pool then this is a good choice in the DR.

“A wonderful place”

The hotel is simple and sweet. The staff is friendly and thoughtful. We had a large number of guest stay for our wedding and they were very happy overall. The hotel did a great job of coordinating the group and gave us a discount.

While it is not on the sea it is only 10 min drive (or taxi) from several very beautiful beaches, cliff jumps, and the town of Cabrera that has a few tasty restaurants. Don't be afraid to venture into town as the residents are very nice and really want to provide good service.

We had some tasty sandwiches at Chori Pan. They even loaned us a cooler to take to the beach with us. Very cool. There is also a restaurant just down the street from there with a thatched roof finish and they make a really nice meal.

The only real issue I have with the hotel is that the internet (the wifi signal strength not the data rate) is weak and requires you to be in the bar to use it but that can be a good thing as it gets you out of your room and at the very least working on the lovely veranda. If you want to stream or rent a film in your room or check email in bed then you are out of luck.

For the price you can hardly beat the service and the quality.

We have enjoyed two stays and would certainly go back if given the chance.
