“Ok for one night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

we stayed at the hotel le canada for one night after coming off the ferry at Ouistreham- the taxi to the hotel cost 18 euros so would have been better to stay at Ouistreham which has a good selection of restaurants and fish stalls selling the local catch. The hotel room (number 5) was clean and pretty but cramped with no coffee or tea making facilities- which we would have appreciated after arriving late at night. The bed was too soft and sagged in the middle, and the shower cubicle was tired and minute- I felt as if I was wearing the shower. Not cheap at 45 euros for the night, but adequate.

“saggy bed, no coffee making facilities but clean and pretty room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

We arrived at 10pm from the ferry, and were tired and thirsty and disappointed there were no coffee making facilities in the room. The room was clean and pretty and not bad value at 45 euros inc of taxes per night. But The bed was old and saggy and the shower room tiny and tired-looking- I felt as if I was wearing the shower cubicle! The hotel is very near the beach and very convenient for the ferry.

“Pet friendly - convenient for ferry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We stayed on our outward and return journey in a room in the garden as we had dogs with us. For the price the room was good, very clean and quite spacious. We found the staff (when making the booking by phone and in person) very friendly and helpful. After reading other remarks about security, I would comment that the rooms themselves have locks on them and this is Hermanville not Brixton.

If you have dogs - the dog friendly beach and surrounding area is only a minute walk away.

Definitely use Le Canada again when going to/from the ferry.

“The worst accommodation in three months of travelling”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

First to be fair - the hotel was clean.

Second to be truthful - the room was unbelievably cramped in a third floor attic with "flying buttresses" across the room and a desk where even a very short lady like me had to bend or move the desk out from the 20 centremetre high wall to be able to sit.

We arrived at 8.00 pm to a locked door and an outside phone with a notice to ring "In an emergency". We decided not being able to access our booked accommodation was an emergency and rang. We were directed to "go to the other house across the road" - no specific instructions about which house - but by finding an unlocked door at the top of steep outside stairs we finally found the room number given on the phone, with a key in the door - about two houses up the road.

In five days we did not see anyone except a lady overseeing the self-serve breakfast the first morning. After that we went out for breakfast as it was so BAD and such poor value.

On the last night I misjudged the "flying buttress" and ended up flat on the floor with a bruise on my forehead and a bruise elsewhere! We don't dislike attic rooms as long as they are not dangerous - in fact we stayed in some beautiful attic style rooms.

“You get what you pay for - not a lot!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

I selected this hotel because 1) it was the cheapest that I could find at short notice and 2) it was close-ish to the ferry terminal at Ouistreham. I found it easily and was able to park off-road just in front of the hotel. I arrived about 6:30 pm on a Friday night and there was someone on reception who asked my name and asked if I wanted breakfast in the morning - I was then given directions to my room, and that was all the contact I had with "hotel staff" as I left early in the morning.
The room I was allocated was on the first floor in the corner, it had two ill fitting windows and was quite small and sparsely furnished. There was nowhere to put a suitcase except on the floor, and the open hanging rail was only about 30 cms long. There was a small flat-screen TV, but it was fitted to the wall just below the ceiling which meant it was almost impossible to watch unless lying down. Room was described as a "double", but it would have been very cramped to have shared this with anyone else - especially for more than a single night. The room was clean but tired looking - but I really believe the hotel should sort out its bedding and bed linen, as the bottom sheet was made from a nasty blue synthetic material which had started to "bobble", and the mattress protector was plastic - resulting in a crackling & sweaty experience! Also they use blankets rather than quilts.
Although the hotel is walking distance to the beach, there are no restaurants or other entertainment facilities in the immediate area - Ouistreham is about 2km down the road with plenty of restaurants, but it does mean being prepared for an uninteresting walk or taking the car.
Least favourite (after the location and the room) was the noise. The position of my room may have been particularly bad, being directly at the top of the stairs so I could hear all the other hotel guests coming and going - but I could also hear them in their rooms! The floor boards creaked - so even if someone was just walking outside my room I could hear creaking in my room. Ill fitting windows meant it was difficult to keep the traffic noise out - and the road was busy until around midnight on the night I was there. My room was also just above the side "night" entrance, so I could also hear all the other guests returning to the hotel during the evening as they walked over the gravel and through the creaking gate ...
One night was more than enough ... next time I'll pay a bit more and go elsewhere

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at the front unless noise isn't a problem
