“Only false note was a fellow American (alas)!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

We had a wonderful time at the Ludwig der Bayer as part of the Passion Play package: the setting is magnificent, and the air invigoratingly fresh; the bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious and clean, the staff couldn't have been more charming and helpful, and the food was very good indeed. Considering we were a captive audience, they didn't have to try as hard as they did. But we found everyone to be unfailingly hospitable, from the waitstaff who were indulgent with our clumsy attempts at the courtesies in German, to the receptionist who gladly sent my postcards for me.
To complain - as someone else has done - about where they were seated at dinner, is frankly a little embarrassing. We were all on a package deal. Get over it! Had the reviewer followed instructions, she would have found a table set aside especially for her and her son, with their name on it, which was hers for the rest of her stay. A charming, welcoming idea, we thought, that made us feel instantly at home.
We loved the dinner - apple strudel and other German tasty treats were just what we wanted to try. Isn't that part of the point of travel?
In fact our only false note was a fellow American (alas) guest, who having burnt her own toast at the magnificent breakfast buffet, brazenly "stole" my daughter's!

“Nice stay - quiet surroundings - nice views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

We stayed here as part of an Oberammergau Passion Play package. It is only a 10 minute drive to Oberammergau with the bus stop directly across the street. The rooms are unpretentious but very clean. The patio out back looks onto the hillside. The restaurant served us dinner and breakfast as part of the package. The breakfast was a good hot and cold buffet. The dinners were well cooked and traditional German fare. Of course, the dessert was Apple Strudel. The location is across the street from the Kloster Ettal (Monastery), which has a beautiful church and grounds. Currently is the home of a boarding school. The famous Kloster Ettal liquors are sold here. Very friendly service at the front desk. There is a spa on site and an indoor pool.

“Great location hotel within 5 mins of Oberammergau and The Passion Play”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

This was a small but clean hotel within a 5min drive to the town of Oberammergau. The staff was friendly, the food pleasureful. Rooms were small but clean and neat. The hotel bills itself as a 3 star and it is, so you shouldn't expect more. We were part of a group, so I don't know the pricing. The food service staff was very accommodating. It was raining so we didn't tour the grounds and had no time to try the spa or indoor pool.

We stayed two nights. We didn't have car, but the parking lot was big and spacious for autos. Hotel had a nice Bavarian charm and was across the street in an easy walk to the abbey.

“Excellent Breakfast, Pity about the rest of it.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

Mty son and I spent a lot of money on a Passion Play package and stayed at Ludwig der Bayer in Ettal as part of it. By the time we booked most of the Oberammergau accomodation was full. We arrived by taxi at about 5 p.m. and were directed to an outside house in the grounds, where we found a lounge, bedroom and bathroom suite. There was a kitchen but the door was locked so we had no access to cold drinks. We were not given a map of Oberammergau to indicate the position of the restaurant where we would be eating on the following day (as part of the package). This was available in the foyer we found out on the monday but of course we were not staying in the main hotel. Also part of the package was dinner that evening. When we walked from the house to the hotel people were eating on the terrace so my son got a table whilst I went inside to make ourselves known. I spoke to a waitress and told her we would eat outside. At this point my so came into the dining room followed by a waiter and said we had to eat inside. I found out later his exact words were "Passion Play! eat inside". IUt was almost as if we were second clas guests. I said that we would eat outside and that was that. Although this hotel had an a la carte menu we were given very little choice. Starter was soup, it was delicious, but that was it. For the main course we were given a choice of four meals. My salmon was served to me and my son didn't get his pork meal until twenty minutes later when I went in search of the waiter to find out where it was. They had apparently forgotten to bring it, my son thinks we were being punished for daring to insist on eating outside. Dessert was Apple Strudle and ice cream, again no choice take it or leave it. Considering the amount of money we paid for this package I feel we were very badly served at this meal. The accommodation was OK I wouldn';t call it 4 star quality and we had to pay 5 euros per day for an internet cable, when at other places we stayed on our trip, a B & B in Interlaken and a 2 star hotel in Salzburg this was all free. I must admit that the breakfast at Ludwig der Bayer was excellent and we did make use of the Pool and the Jacuzzi, but on the whole very disappointing considering the cost of staying there.

“A very ordinary hotel with a nightmare manageress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2010

I think this hotel manages to survive because of its proximtiy to Oberammergau. It is large and ordinary, food was ordinary, the manager rude. even when their was a fire alarm at 6.00 a.m. the manger still managed to be rude. Nice swimming pool
