“Lovely building & surroundings, rather disappointing room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2006

Bit disappointed with this one - but probably mainly because i fell for the old "best room in the place pictured on the website" trick - i was expecting something along the lines of this: (---) - you'll see the difference between that and the room we actually got from my pics!

However, the chateau itself was very beautiful (again see pics) and the staff helpful and pleasant. The room was OK, just very small and the bed rather small for myself and 6'2 partner, but then we found this in much of France - small doubles seemed to be the norm. Bathroom was also OK but nothing special. On the plus side, we got a peaceful night's sleep, and the view from the window was very pretty. We paid 80 euros for the room which is probably still reasonable value for money - but anything more than one night in this room would not be much fun.

“This is the kind of a place you think only exists in fairy tales.”

We returned here this summer and brought our children - teenagers - with us so to enjoy a place we'd fallen in love with before. It was all we remembered and then some. The hotel has been beautifully maintained and the surrounding parkland now features a herd of fallow deer, which you can watch grazing while enjoying the delicious meals in the dining room.

We had a room in the main building of the Chateau, which is really a two storey suite. Downstairs my wife and I enjoyed a very large bedroom and well appointed bath with a lovely view of the surrounding countryside. Upstairs our teenagers had two distinct sleeping areas separated by their bathroom, and they had a close up look at the huge wooden beams that have held up the roof of the Chateau for four or more centuries. All of this for 200 E. Amazing!

This is the kind of a place you think only exists in fairy tales.

Our daughter told us that the dinner in the dining room was the best she has ever eaten and who are we to disagree? It is definitely a destination restaurant. That night, however, we had the dining room nearly to ourselves, and were treated graciously by the waiter, who happened to be sporting a tie with subtle Mickey Mouse logos. When we commented favorably about that, he was thrilled and the next time he came to the table he had another (backup?) Mickey tie to show us. And he informed us he had about 30 more...

We strolled in the grounds after dinner and over to the lovely parish church. Before checking in, we had been up to Chateauneuf, the medieval walled town near by, and this time we were able to tour the castle there. Many other landmarks dot the area, this would be a good base from which to spend a week exploring the region.

  • Liked — It was like living in another world--charming and historic.
  • Disliked — That we had to leave it so soon.
  • Tips/Secrets — We went out of our way, renting a car in Dijon, to get here. It was worth it.
